Install Nightmares

Post by Hyno Designs » Fri Feb 22, 2019 2:13 am

Just want to tell my story and it may help others.

I was sitting around waiting one day and was looking at YouTube video and found TOTW. Thought this was a pretty neat idea, and planned on trying it out on an extra computer. Needless to say I didn't have the DLC for NV, so I ordered the DVD of the complete edition on EBAY. It came in the mail with no code, and you can't just hack in to the DVD and pull the files so I was forced to buy them from Steam. Whatever. Than I go to install TOTW and my Fallout 3 game in unregistered. So I have to go by the game from Steam.

Note to the YouTube video guy, some of us are idiots and we have no idea what the hell we are doing, and just finding the ini plug in on the MOD2 program was a nightmare. Let me put it this way, I couldn't get pass the tutorial.

Recap: Have to purchase the NV game 3 times, than re-buy the Fallout 3 game from Steam with all the DLC's. (I have 3 DVD's and two Internet purchases of the game from Steam)

Again Mr. YouTube video guy tell us to make these custom directories and whatever. I install TOTW. The screen doesn't load up in full screen mode and it cashes about 1 minute in to loading. Had to figure out how to re-write the ini file to do full screen 1920x1080. The game keeps crashing and I hate this MOD2 program, don't understand it and no idea what I am doing.

My load order is fine, checked it 10 times. So finally said the heck with it and I will do it the old fashion way and just dump all the files in to the data file and run the game from the FNV.exe. Someone it worked.

I read something about the re-doing of the audio. I am an audio guy. The first thing I noticed when starting the game, the audio sounded clipped of Dad's voice and the quality seemed way worse than it was in the normal Fallout 3 standalone game. Don't know what was done to the audio. Honestly playing Fallout3, never noticed bad audio or clipped audio in my game. Granted the game uses mono ogg files were when I do custom sounds and voices I am also using uncompressed CD quality wav files. I will say this, the graphics did look better for sure.

Steam or GoG versions of New Vegas or Fallout 3 work, the retail version of Fallout 3 works fine too as long as it's patched to the GOTY edition.

The audio is re-encoded by the installer to fix the clipping. If you ran the batch file that skips that then that's your choice. Fallout 3 does not have the same sound engine, and there are a great many other engine differences.

Mod Organizer 2 has a learning curve, most people are using it these days and the video provided is really straight forward and easy to understand if you already know how it works, to which there is also videos on how to install and use it (which are separate).

Modding these games takes time and experience, the information is out there and is easily accessible.

The retail versions of NV require Steam, so having the DVD copy is almost useless. Besides all the DLC is required for both games.
