A question regarding the custom ini iNumHWThreads

Post by STREET_BLAZER » Thu Dec 27, 2018 5:28 am

Regarding the custom ini feature that comes with 3.2- I saw in the FAQ the installer takes both "logical and hardware" cores into account, also to include hyper threading.

The installer set my custom ini to iNumHWThreads=12

This is despite my processor having only 6 cores. I was under the impression iNumHWThreads was based solely off hardware. Can someone briefly explain why logical cores somehow increase the iNumHWThreads value to 12?

Just trying to understand the process here...

If anything, what I really want to know is if the iNumHWThreads value provided in the custom ini should be used in ALL builds of fallout 3 and NV (ie vanilla) as a general rule of thumb, or is this ONLY optimised for TTW 3.2.

Thank you for any insight provided on this matter!

While having iNumHWThreads setting to use all cpu's thread (I have 4 cores) benefits the speed and less stutter, I'm always had random freeze. If I set iNumHWThreads=2 my game will be stable but will stutter later after 2-3 hours of playing. I read on reddit's post about iNumHWThreads more than 4 cores with no freeze is possible if you cap your framerate below 60fps (59fps maybe).

If you don't cap your framerate to 60 or below the game will break. Havok, lipsync and possibly other things will break.

I was able to confirm this information looking at a few reddit threads as well. Limiting FPS < 60 seems to be a key factor here. I personally use NVSR while disabling V-SYNC (both through the launcher and GPU settings) as well as any ENB-integrated limiter.

Thank you for the timely responses!

I cap it with the driver using nvidia profile inspector, I set 59.7 fps and use fast sync.

Hadn't thought of that- probably worth a try though as it would essentially just eliminate an otherwise redundant process for the engine to handle.

isn't fast sync supposed to work above 60 fps only ?
