Better Computer, less mods

Post by Cannibal_Kon » Fri Apr 11, 2014 3:54 am

So it's been a while since I've been on here. Been busy with life and getting around for that. I decided to try Fallout: NV with my awesome(?) new Alienware Laptop that's like 50 times better than my old one and I've always had a big problem of trying to get all the mods I can into one game so I've always had a lot of mods. Well I've always been used to running over 200+ mods (I know really bad, it's why I've been slowly getting rid of them but I know I can handle them) and then after I switch to my new laptop suddenly I can only have 97 of like the 200 mods on at once or else the game crashes after it begins loading the menus. Is the fact that I have some mods loaded up into the load order while not having them active also affecting it? This is something I have done just so I can slowly test the mods in conjunction but if so I can remove the ones that aren't checked at the moment. I'm basically asking if there's any way for me to maximize the amount of mods I can have since my laptop is better than it was before.

If you need my computer stats just direct me to finding them in windows 7 and I'll give them to you. I'd prefer to lose as few mods as possible but if it helps I'll try it.

I also run this through BOSS a few times but make sure to rearrange the load order for TTW since I know it likes to move the optional packs a lot.

Any help would be lovely, thank you in advance.

Edit: I should mention the mods that aren't actually checked are also not shown in the load order.

I also tend to run a lot of mods. One thing that was pointed out to me is to "merge" similar mods together into one .esp. There is a program on the nexus to do this, I don't remember the program off the top of my head. I only merge mods that I know that I'll always play with, and won't get tired of. Doing this I was able to lower my active list by 50. Hope this helps.

FNVPlugin is the merging tool

Post by plumjuice » Fri Apr 11, 2014 5:09 am

FNVPlugin is the merging tool. Try to only merge mods that are either optional plugins for a base mod or only contain formID, level lists, and other simple records. Merging things with dialogue and scripts can break things if you do it wrong.

Merged and/or bashed patches are essential to make large amounts of mods work together. Merged patches are made by FNVEdit and bashed patches are made by Wrye Flash. Both are available on Nexus and both have extensive tutorials and relevant information.

Some mods /do/ affect the game even if disabled, so as a rule of thumb, uninstall instead of disable. Most mods install/uninstall pretty quickly even on trash specs (I know because my laptop sucks balls) and the ones that dont are usually pretty extensive and thus more likely to be ones that edit the game when disabled.

More Perks has already been merged and can be found on the NVEC Nexus page. There is a version on this site that has merged FNV and FO3 More Perks mods if you want moar perks.

Crashing on startup is usually caused by things like having mods active with disabled masters or plugins loading before their masters. Load order should be managed by BOSS and BOSS Userlist Manager and both wrye flash and fnvedit will reveal if mods have disabled masters. Wrye through red checkboxes, fnvedit through not loading a load order and telling you mods have disabled masters.

There are a bunch of very good and easy to understand tutorials by a youtuber called gopher. You should watch them.

Just so you know: any mod

Post by TJ » Fri Apr 11, 2014 1:06 pm

Just so you know: any mod that's in your data folder (even if it's unchecked in mod manager of choice) is read by FNV on load. That's why it's recommended to uninstall instead of just uncheck mods that you don't use. Another note: There is no clear cut glass ceiling when it comes to mod numbers. One machine may be able to handle having a large number of mods loaded while that same number causes another to freak out. Game engine issues, regardless of how powerful your computer is. Most folks generally agree the limit is 150 plugins, while I myself have seen stability start breaking down at around 80. Point being, having a bunch of mods is fine, you just want to have as few plugins as you can manage.

Thank you guys for the info, if you have any ideas on which mods would be best put together to reduce the plugin count as well as keep what (little?) stability I may have that would help. I'm fine learning about those things if it'll help me in the long run. I've been able to host 256 mods on my Skyrim so I was a little concerned about only having 97 mods but Tj's post about plugins and mods helped a bit. In the end I'm just asking, what would be good to merge from what you can see? Where would be a good place to start learning about this? and what should I do to prevent this from becoming a problem again?

You could remove all of those

Post by farmerboy464 » Fri Apr 11, 2014 10:18 pm

You could remove all of those individual 'More Perks' .esm and .esp files.  Either use the NV version from NVEC (http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/44204/?) (NVEC is not required, he simply posted it on that page), or you could try the special TTW version (http://taleoftwowastelands.com/content/perk-mods).  This adds both FNV and FO3 More Perks with just 1 .esm, with an optional .esp to modify some of the perks.
