Union Station

Post by TrickyVein » Tue Apr 23, 2013 2:11 am

I am working on creating Union Station to be located in a new worldspace in the DC ruins somewhere E-NE of the Capitol Building. It will connect to the current 'Union Station' interior cell which currently serves to connect DC to Nevada. I wanted to give TTW a unique building to heighten the experience of travel between the two wastelands.

Union Station in real life is a grand and imposing example of monumental, 'capitol' type architecture, whatever type it's called, formally - a really beautiful and iconic building. Anyone who has the opportunity should definitely see it for themselves and walk through its grand interiors.

I will be updating this thread with shots of my progress as I continue working on these models and eventually bring them into the NV engine and begin to put together the final worldspace.

It's a really, really, big building (about 3 cells across on the outside, currently) so it would be great if we could come up with some ideas of how to use the space. I also appreciate ideas/feedback on how to make things look 'falloutified' and destroyed - which is always the most fun to do when it comes to modeling for Fallout.

But...OK, please level with me. The LW cannot be the Courier with Lonesome Road. The Hoover Damn Campaign takes place just before the start of FO3 and by that time, the Divide has already been destroyed after the Courier has spent at least two years building it up. They can't be the same person. Also, this building while wonderful needs to have some kind of air travel rather than train: if rail travel is that spotty between Nipton and Vegas, you can bet there's no rail lines going through Caesar's territory. There's also the thing where anything between DC and the Pitt and then going through a potentially uncharted Midwest, depending on how cannon you take Fallout tactics.

Air Travel makes more sense, but all you'd need then would be to make a roof exterior with a plane, a vertibird, or if feeling ambitious, an airship.

I'm thinking the best option for this would be to put it in it's own worldspace, and link it to the downtown by tunnels (like the outcast outpost in OA). That way you'd avoid conflicts, and can go to town on designing the exterior cell and make sure it's shown for the grand building its meant to be.

Those were my thoughts too. It also means I get to avoid having to create LOD models for the thing.

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

As TJMidnight said: there's a mod for it. Also, in-canon there's a 4 year gap (october 2277-october 2281) and in TTW there's a 9 year gap because 4 years didn't feel long enough (and there wasn't a convenient '[x] years later' fadeout movie file for 4 years). There's a mod planned to expand upon the perils of traveling by rail across the pre-war USA, and given the time gap in TTW, there is definitely enough time for the events of Lonesome Road's Backstory to occur.

Some quick updates on the interior of the station:

[collapsed title=the collapsed and crumbling ceiling][/collapsed];

[collapsed title=early work on the the ground-level entrances leading outside and deeper into the station][/collapsed].

I plan on busting up the floor tiles and having patches of grass and water amidst the rubble and broken pieces of the ceiling. The area will be open to the sky and so it will probably be its own worldspace.

There are these neat, circular wooden structures which are there now we may offer some possibilities for an enemy encampment or the like as per pwinkle's idea.
