Thinking About Making A TTW RadioStation

Post by Computerrock1 » Wed May 22, 2013 11:18 pm

The biggest problem I forsee is me posting copyrighted material and people using the files for their own gains beyond that of the radio station. So before I even delve into development, which would start after I finish my NVEC patch. I was wondering if there would be a way of securing the sound files in a way that only FNV could use them and they couldn't be ripped, perhaps through a file extension that could only be used through the game or something to that effect.

I plan to make this mod in multiple parts based on genre, I see no reason have someone download an entire radio station and only wanna listen to a quarter of it. It will break lore, but if I can convince one of my more smooth talking friends to read some lines I may be able to have a radio personality that could make it more lore friendly, how you ask, I'm not quite sure but I'll figure out as soon as I find a way to secure the audio files.

The mod will be called *I think* Counter Communism Sattelite Radio *or something* CCSR for short... The idea being it's being broadcasted through out the entire US wasteland, that way it'll make sense when you can hear it in both wastelands :)

Any ideas are welcome and I don't expect to start working on it for a while as school will always come first and at the moment I'm pretty swamped...

I should also note that I believe that the majority of the TTW community would be more than willing to just not touch the files, but there are those who don't read things and just click and go...

Also, I have some pretty nice recording equipment, well I had nice equipment, it moved up to GA with the rest of my stuff, but I can get that sent down here. Did I ever mention that I restore old timey music and build stereo equipment as a hobby?

I see a problem with using other people's music. Whether the files are protected or not, you're still distributing someone's work without their permission. Maybe I'm wrong here, but I think that's a big no-no.

Like the idea of CCSR, but with all mod ideas, it's hard for me to get too invested seeing as it's just an idea right now. Not saying it won't come to fruition, but take a look at a lot of the mod requests and ideas on the Nexus.

I have to ask, though, what genre of music would you want to incorporate?

Here is a genre list:

Oldies: 40's through 60's, I have a ton of ratpack albums...

Southern Rock

Contemporary

Instrumental

Jazz

Instrumental Jazz

Alternative

Hard Rock

*Rap (Only If by Popular Demand)

*Pop (Only If By Pop. Especially seeing how it breaks lore)

and probably a couple more I can't think of at the moment, I have a large album collection that I've inhereted from my parents. All songs on my hard drive are remastered to my "specs".

Distributing music is a big

Post by Computerrock1 » Wed May 22, 2013 11:33 pm

Distributing music is a big no if it's readily available (not secured) and/or I am charging the user for it. I also have to give credit to each and every artist I feature, which I plan to do. I know that a lot of older music's copyrights have expired so I am not affraid to make an oldies module in the least bit.

If the music is up for free

If the music is up for free use or the rights have expired, then you could use it and distribute it. Just because you aren't charging the users for it and also giving credit doesn't mean you're allowed to do it. That's like saying you can download music from ThePirateBay because you aren't giving the poster money and the poster gives the artist credit.

That's absolutely true...

So I just have to look really hard for music without a copyright... yay?

Perhaps I should allow the user to fill up the modules themselves *It's my backup idea if I can't find enough material*? That would make all the legal stuff go away and I could still add non-copyrighted music to it in the main module.

personally, i'd rather have something i can add my own music to.  that eliminates the copyright issues for you, and would allow each user a chance to customize the station for themselves.

in my last FO3 playthrough, i used the Enclave Radio Fixed Extended mod to get 40 songs and replaced all the music with Evanescence and Garbage. which made listening to the eyebots much more pleasant.

after destroying Raven Rock, i switched them to Agatha's station using Agatha's Radio Extended. not quite as satisfying.

combined with Reneers Radio Mod, it meant i could have music i wanted to hear, and more variety on just about every radio/jukebox in the wasteland (there is also a NV version, Reneers Radio Mod NV).

i plan on seeing how Reneers Radio Mod NV work with TTW, but it's pretty far down on my list of things to do.

any way, that's my two cents on the matter

The internet archive - http://archive.org/ - is a great repository of music in the public domain. You can find a lot of great oldies artists in the music section, and most files are passably good quality (128kbps mp3).

The plus for old music that isn't the best quality is it sounds like an old record, which is what makes some of the music in FO so good.
