[WIP] Special random encounters for New Vegas

Post by sesom » Wed Mar 13, 2013 10:45 pm

For the big mod I am working on I needed a random/special encounter system. I decided to implement a system similar to the Fallout 3 in the New Vegas engine for Fallout The Story.

As I gave it some thought I remembered that New Vegas doesn't has such a system at all and that this mod I am working on also would be very interesting as a standalone version and very easy to make. Only placing my triggers and adjusting the encounters to the NV lore is needed.

To be clear I don't talking about fighting encounters or increased spawns here (even if I use it this way in Fallout The Story ;) ). It's about small little random things that happen while you are traveling through the Mojave Wasteland.

A few examples from FO3 to make it easy to understand what I mean here:

o A dealer who sells you some chems.

o A robber who tries to rob the player (not very successful ;) ).

o Hunters which are hunting some creatures and you can buy meat from.

o A small minefield that was forgotten.

o A group of Ghouls resting which are one the way to Underworld.

They can appear on different locations and aren't in the same place on different playthroughs and only have very minor effects on the game world.

This little encounters was one of the things I missed most in NV.

I got the basic system up and running and already made 5 NV Specific encounters in two days. My goal is to reach 30 before I will release. I have 21 planned out for my own. But I need more so it doesn't get repetitive.

So what I am looking for and need a bit of help with are suggestions for New Vegas specific random encounters in the style I mentioned above. Small little things that makes it interesting to travel through the Mojave. Any ideas are welcome when they fit in the world of New Vegas.

Because I also make a TTW specific version of this mod suggestion from the CW that would fit in NV are very welcomed too.

Well for the TTW one, an encounter with east coast enclave perhaps. IDK... that's pretty far fetched, but figured I'd throw it out there.

You mean a small group of them (soldier, officer and maybe scientist) very irritated with a train ticket on them ;) . Not sure if I do it but maybe as a very rare unique one (same chances as the firelance in FO3).

For combat oriented, DFB made good random encounter mod which spawns various enemies from vicious dogs to enclave vertibird. For specific events like back in fo3, I find it difficult to think over 30+ amount of encounters without being duplicated. The whole list of encounters you've planned would be most useful to avoid such reproduction from the start. But that's just a suggestion. wink

As already mentioned this mod

As already mentioned this mod is not intended to be combat oriented. I know there are already a lot of them out there which serve that purpose. Yes it's difficult to think about 30 different ones that why I ask for help ;).  I add my list under some kind of spoiler tags. If you want to get spoiled simply mark them. Please no discussion about the spoilered encounters without spoiler marks.

Repeatable:

01. Some harmless animals Iguana and RadRoaches hanging around a corpse and getting aggressive if the player comes near their prey. (counts for 2)

02. Drunk Gamblers who invite the player (is sometimes fake). If player accept (per dialogue) he

03. Gambler who ask the player to join game (they can betray)

04. Junkie who asks for chems.

06. A courier with different letters on him

07. Powderganger with a explosive problem ;). (player has to defuse it or he explodes (with player)

08. Unlucky Robber

09. Dealer

10. small Minefield

Unique:

01. A group of travelers which are taking a rest around a burning barrel.

02. A prospector which has found some tech and is defending it,

03. A traveler who can be met in the middle of the night in the wastes who has a little bedbug problem

04. A brotherhood paladin who can't move because his powerarmor is rusty and is in desperate need of a oil can

05. A few (1-3) Iguanas start following the player if he comes near them.

06. Bob with 3 following Iguanas

07. Sign placer

09. The prisoner who runs to the player and asks for help. If player refuses he gets hunted by floating eyebots and shot down. If the player helps eyebots get aggressive on player.

10. Curizified NCR soldier, Powderganger

11. Legion patrol with slaves or NCR with captured Legion spy

12. (TTW only) Enclave scouting mission with Train Tickets ;) .

Remember the Fallout New Vegas Spot that was aired on TV in the USA?. A damaged Securitron was lying in the floor outside the Strip while projecting a prewar spot about Las Vegas ... "Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada, The jewel of the desert....*shortcircuit*".

Perhaps you could create a Securitron like the one displayed in the pictures and it could be found randomly travelling and reproducing the same part we see in the video until the shortcircuit starts to indicate failure.  To me it looks as if the Securitron was supposed to be a walking ad/crier for the strip on prewar times...it had a system error and instead of finishing its routine it just kept rolling and repeating one time and again the same part of the spot, like a scratched vynyl record, and had a hard time all this years wandering around the Mojave (regarding to environmental exposure and lack of maintenance). When we see it in the video lying on the floor it's because its malfunction got worse, it ran out of energy, whatever...let's say well meet him before that happens

The sound could be ripped from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqzjlrI6W1s

I like all of the ideas keep them coming. Little follow ups to quests or such things as the rolling Vegas crier (even if he is a lot of work but I make him) where the things I looked for. Thanks.

Not sure if you have played Outside Bets Uncut mod (in case not here you have it: http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/46648)  , but one of the things it restored was a corpse of a man with a swarm of bloatflies flying in circles around him (The bloatlies are very tiny, almost like the size of an African bee). It is placed next to a trash container in an alley located in Freeside East (near Mick and Ralphs, where a guy makes you a sign with his hand indicating you to follow him).

Well, the idea is to see how the swarm was created to emulate it, or if is a game resource to use it. It will be needed for the following joke:

A swarm of little bloatflies pestering a Deathclaw or a Supermutant Behemont. Both Deathclaw and Behemont will be so pissed off and absorbed trying to shoo and even fleeing from them to even notice your presence or any other creature/ NPC. It would be fun to see something so little tormenting such an enormous brute. They can be set up to ignore every other NPC, and all the NPC’s will shoot them on sight (they won’t even pay attention to the fact they’re being attacked, the only thing in their little minds is to get rid of the swarm). The tinier the bloaflies are the funnier. Also, if they are normal size it will be more like a fight between Fiends and NCR than a joke. All bloatflies of the swarm are essential.

If you go for the Behemont option, you can make the encounter more unique if you use one of the models specifically created for FNV and provided by Creature and Weapon Modders Resources mod http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/39419/?tab=3&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmodimages%2F%3Fuser%3D0%26id%3D39419  I would go for the blue one with the water feed if you ask me

A merchant and his mercenary chasing his evasive pack molerat...you can use the one provided by New creatures ressource by tumbajamba  http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/7201 The scene will look more less like the kids in Freeside chasing the little rat. That will teach the wasteland people that some creatures cannot be tamed.

Or you can simply put a male merchant with an outfit similar to the one in the picture riding the molerat and travelling. It will be an special encounter and like a tribute to the concept art

Oh, and if you want to include the following prisoner you can put a slave collar to an npc with a similar wastelander outfit…as far as I know, there isn’t an animation of an NPC walking with the hands tied, but that should create the same illusion.

A group of Nuns (Sisters of the perpetual Candle) travelling together with a packing mule with supplies for the needy,  and armed to the teeth with rifles (kinda followers of the apocalypse, but I wanted to stress their religious nature).  And woe betide anyone or anything that tries to attack them. All the nuns are essential. Here you have the outfits:

Father and Nun clothes by Backsteppo

http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/10190/?tab=3&navtag=%2Fajax%2Fmodimages%2F%3Fuser%3D0%26id%3D10190

The Father is not required...the idea is to picture a nice group of nuns that in prewar times are very harmless, but that haven't lost their helping nature in a postapocalyptic world... doing whatever it's required to do their duty, and that includes not to let anyone to mess with them or gettting in their way.

This video was the inspiration...they decided to go out in a dangerous neighborhood and did whatever they could to help people, even if that meant to expose their own lives.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4DybHrnFlY

(Ignore the barbie doll look of the nun below. They could have a generic appearance, and maybe one or two of them be old womans. I posted this image because it was faster).

No one or nothing gets in their way...

Again, ignore the Father.

Also, if you approach them you'll find out that they're selling some stuff. One of them could be a vendor and offer you Rompope made with fresh Brahmin milk or some mutfruit cookies (both items previously created on GECK). Rompope it's the traditional beverage that Nuns sell where I live, by the way...and they bake cookies and similar goodies. the world may have endured the apocalypsis, but that didn't stop them from doing their duties.
