Save the Food!

Post by improvman » Mon Feb 02, 2015 3:54 am

As one levels up and gains survival skills food begins to be worth more.  However, if you want to avoid penalties you cannot exceed 200 hunger.  To illustrate the idea, the M.R.E. has 240-600 food.  So at 10 survival you would be forced to toss out the candy-bar.  However at 100 survival you are forced to toss two-thirds of the meal.

This has been major peeve to me, as what survivalist would just toss food.

My idea was food could degrade and when the value reaches zero, and get removed.

I feel like I'm missing

Post by TJ » Mon Feb 02, 2015 8:35 pm

I feel like I'm missing something here. Hunger starts at 0 and goes up. If you're 200 hungry at 10 survival based on what you said you'd get 240 hunger points. 200 - 240 is -40, but as previously stated hunger starts at 0. Are you talking about creating a new hardcore needs mod?

Death or unconsciousness from

Post by KeltecRFB » Mon Feb 02, 2015 8:45 pm

Death or unconsciousness from food is a little unrealistic in Fallout.   The same with water, in most of Fallout conditions, you probably could not go without water for about 1 day.  They teach in survivalist classes, you are more likely to succumb to water issues, dehydration and/or contamination, than anything else.  Depending on the environment, it will take anywhere from 1 day to 10 days to die from dehydration while the average starvation is about a month give or take depending on activity and climate.   Yes, you can die from exposure but I am going by the number of deaths per condition.  In the military, more people passed out from heat related illness than anything else.

I think he's talking about how you never let yourself get above 200 hunger, but so many food items heal more than 200.

(s)he's saying, since there's no negative value, and you can eat in excess of your starvation meter, then you're wasting food by overeating, and maybe there should be a system to reduce that.  like maybe a degredation system for the foods i guess.

Degradation of food items is in IMCN:NV (not finding a link from my phone, sorry). It has calculated food degradation over time with refrigeration requirements and other such things.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure

Honestly, I'm pretty sure there's way more food in the game than you could possibly worry about ever consuming it all in a full game. And really, you should just blame Obsidian for tying Survival into food effects. Honestly I see the food value as a combination of nutrition and calories, and no matter how much you know about things, you can't draw more calories from places they don't exist. Unless we're supposed to believe that for whatever reason, the less-than-100 skill player eats so messily that they drop half their food on the ground every time they eat.
