Whitley/ED-E Quest mod idea

Post by artofsushi » Mon Dec 23, 2013 3:58 am

I've been playing TTW for a week or so now and really enjoying it. Had a thought while starting Broken Steel the other day. We know that Whitley works at Adams AFB from F:NV. A cool quest (unmarked most likely) could be to, while going through Adams with the CW BoS, you run across a non-hostile Enclave scientist (perhaps walking in on him just as he's sending the eyebot that will eventually become ED-E off on it's trip across the country) and can choose to murder him or let him live. Death items could be a note about the eyebot project.

Then, when we get to the Mojave, and finish ED-E's personal quest, there could be lines of dialog (easy to add dialog to ED-E by re-mixing its current beeps and boops) with ED-E explaining what the LW/Courier did with the enclave scientist back at Adams AFB.

Quest fail-states could be admitting to killing Wheatley - ED-E immediately becomes hostile and attacks, on death leaving nothing, or perhaps a pieces of encalve tech.

Leaving Whitley alive could result in an additional companion perk for ED-E, the LW/Courier having given it even more reasons to protect the PC now.

Either way, Wheatly should exit from the world map.

Continuity-wise, I think one could either disable ED-E in the Mojave until the completion of Broken Steel, or, if moving to the Mojave before Broken Steel, disabling Wheatley and having the PC miss the quest entirely when going back to do BS.

I'm more of a user of mods than a modder myself, though I am willing to help with writing and plotting if there's interest from someone well-versed in GECK-fu and NVEdit-jisu.

It'd be far easier and more

It'd be far easier and more sensical to have Whitley around doing stuff whether or not ED-E is with you and only have him remark if you have ED-E with you - doing what you suggested is a pain in the ass and messes with continuity. Or you can start a conversation with him and find out who he is.  I've actually been giving this some thought myself lately.

I'm considering putting him in a base my Unity mod adds, so you're not in a location that automatically gives you the potential to shoot on sight and it explains the existence of another advanced eyebot I'm adding.

I agree with your first

I agree with your first paragraph, though what would be the (quasi-)canon reason for Whitley being in your base? It's established that he did work at Adams AFB. Is your new base attached to Adams? Or would Whitley be transferred over to your base after sending ED-E on its journey?

...because it's a mod and because he said so?

I kind of agree with the OP,

I kind of agree with the OP, there should be at least some explanation for why a character from the story appears in someone's mod.

It's a mutineer Enclave base

It's a mutineer Enclave base run by a general named Cotter. The entire point to the base is to portray the Enclave as human beings instead of faceless target practice.  One of the characters is an experimental eyebot named Eyebot, Voice Enhanced Subject A (EVE-A). So given that Whitley is not a genocidal maniac and I already have an experimental eyebot there, his presence makes sense and is in line with my Unity mod, which has the goal of making Fallout 3's story make sense in the larger Fallout universe, because it doesn't.

Although, canonically, Whitley is probably one of the nameless Enclave scientists at Adams AFB you gunned down without a second thought.
