Companions with weapon mods

Sometimes I like to be sneaky and put a silencer on a gun, yet if I give an identical gun to my companion, they gain no benefit and our cover is quickly blown... Would it even be possible for a mod to be made with which your companions properly use modded weapons? I've never seen one for F3 or FNV, so I assume there's something keeping people from making it.

Basically mods are player 1 ONLY the game does not check for them or handle them unless they are on the player's currently equipped weapon. A mod COULD be made to work around this by creating dummy weapons and modifying the base form for companions, but it would be a nightmare to make and maintain, especially with mod compatibility.

Would it be possible to make the game check for them on equip regardless of whether it's the player or an npc?
