Unable to start new game from main menu

Post by covellite » Wed Sep 13, 2017 12:01 am

Windows 7, i5-7600K, 16GB RAM

Mod Organizer v. 1.3.11

Fallout 3 GOTY (Steam)

Fallout NV Ultimate Edition (Steam)

Install log attached.

Load order here.

Issue 1: I'm only able to start game via Mod Organizer, otherwise I get an application error. I've patched FalloutNV.exe, but using that to start only gets me as far as the copyright notice, then CTD. Same for nvse_loader.exe. Strangely, running nvse_loader from within Mod Organizer works?

Issue 2: If I start via Mod Organizer, I'm unable to start a new game at the main menu. It asks me to confirm that it's okay to overwrite my autosave (I have a test character outside the vault for mod testing), but nothing happens whichever option I select (nothing = the confirmation prompt disappears, but I remain stuck at the main menu). I am able to load the test save and play.

Thought it might be the ENB, so I removed all the ENB related files, but the result is the same.

I've read this https://taleoftwowastelands.com/content/mod-organizer-users-please-read, and I tried to recreate that order by moving mods around in the left pane, but I can't recreate the list 100%, because the bsa files within a mod are in a different order.  E.g. all the FO3 bsas within the TTW - main mod.

I've probably overlooked something very basic, but at the moment I can't see the wood for the trees. I'd really appreciate some help!

If you mod the game with MO

Post by GrantSP » Wed Sep 13, 2017 2:02 am

If you mod the game with MO then you MUST run the game with MO.

Mod Organizer uses a VFS to enable mods to be seen in the "Data" folder even though they are installed elsewhere, trying to run the game without MO will not work.

As for the ordering of the BSAs the easiest way to do this is close MO down and manually edit the 'archives.txt' found in the "profiles" folder of the MO install. You correctly surmise this is due to the BSAs all being inside the one mod in MO's left-pane.

Since you haven't yet started the game any saves you currently have will be useless, you will need to start a new game.

Hmm, I ran a heavily modded STEP install for Skyrim and I remember being able to launch from a desktop shortcut (I think to SKSE), but it's not a big deal, I'll just always use MO.

I've edited archives.txt to reflect the correct order (thanks for the tip). I noticed that the TTW bsa had a different name than in Roy's post:

"You should rename taleoftwowastelands.bsa to taleoftwowastelands - main.bsa , this will be done automatically in the next update."

So I renamed it, too. These changes haven't fixed the problem though. I am still unable to start a new game. sad

One of the things the FOMOD

Post by jlf65 » Wed Sep 13, 2017 4:23 pm

One of the things the FOMOD created by the TTW Installer does is to change a few ini settings. One of those settings is the chargen quest - if it's not changed, the game will CTD when you try to start a new game as it starts with the wrong quest. Check your FALLOUT.ini to make sure it's been changed correctly, like this:

SCharGenQuest = 001FFFF8

For some reason that line

Post by covellite » Wed Sep 13, 2017 8:16 pm

For some reason that line looked like this in fallout.ini: SCharGenQuest=001FFFF8 = 001FFFF8. I modified it and was placed in a tiny pitch black room without light. I read somewhere that this is used to display the Startup Menu, so I started wondering if that was the problem.

Long story short, it was. For some reason, when the installer generated the optional esps, the TTW_StartupMenu.esp was from 24 Jan 2000?! Actually, now that I look again ALL of the optional esps that that I chose to use are from Jan 2000. Is that right?

Anyway, I located this post with an updated version of the file from 2015. That one gets me as far as the character creation menu in the delivery room at least before the game crashes. Progress!
