System Restore Wiped Stuff

Post by Kurt91 » Thu Jul 27, 2017 7:38 am

I downloaded TTW nearly a week ago. Never played it before, but figured it would be a good idea now that I actually have the DLC needed for New Vegas and Fallout 3. (Steam version for both, FO3 is GOTY version) Used Fallout Mod Manager, followed all of the directions, and after two days of fiddling with everything, got it running with all of the mods that I was wanting to use. (I played both games without DLC and with no mods. Now I want to play a fully-modded game)

Real life issues kicked in before I got to actually play, and I was away from my computer for a couple days. During that time, there was a bit of a power hiccup during the night, and now my computer isn't running quite right. I need to take it in to get it fixed, having spent all day today trying to fix it myself. Even tried a System Restore to fix my issues, to no avail. Finally figured that I might as well try TTW tonight, since my computer problems are all ones that shouldn't affect the game (other than audio, but I'll deal with it.)

Turns out that even though System Restore said that my files wouldn't be affected, I had to re-download Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas. However, all of my mods and everything are still on my computer. I'm a bit wary on how I should go about re-modding my game.

First question: Do I need to run the TTW installer again? I still have the resultant files from running the installer the first time. Can I just clear out my "mods" folder for FOMM and place the TTW files back in there? Once the TTW files are made, is it still necessary to have vanilla FO3 laying around, or are the TTW files all that are needed?

Second question: When I used FOMM, I placed the .7z folders in the mod folder, and when I selected them in "Add FOMOD", it created FOMOD files in the same folder. For my own sanity trying to pick through that folder, can I delete the .7z folders now? I have all of them backed up in a different folder from when I downloaded them.

I'm sorry if these are stupid questions. I'm just incredibly frustrated from trying to fix my PC, and seeing my Fallout games vanish after two days of setting things up, before I even got the chance to play TTW beyond testing if it would even start after a couple complicated mods (primarily the Shojo Race mod, since it requires bits and pieces from other mods for both FO3 and NV to get working) was sort of the breaking point. It's really late where I live, so I was hoping that I could just ask and get an answer before I start working on fixing my game, and go to bed tonight to calm down.

System restores revert the

System restores revert the system registry back to the state they were when you run the tool. This means an registry settings, like those from Fallout 3 and NewVegas, will be missing and therefore the games are viewed as not installed by tools you use on them.

However, all your mods will be just fine as they make no such registry calls, just mod your game again and you will be fine.

If you are truly worried you might like to redo your TTW install, nothing bad will result from doing so and it may be worth the effort in the long run. I'm 99% sure TTW makes no registry settings either, but a 1% chance is still a chance.laugh

Once you have mods installed you can safely delete the downloads but in cases like yours having them on disc will save internet bandwidth and time when you have to re-install them, so if you can keep them, do so.

Thanks for the advice. Turns

Thanks for the advice. Turns out that FOMM ended up completely screwed up. I moved all of my mods to a different folder because FOMM crashed every time it tried to check for updated versions. Because I had removed them all, FOMM immediately started throwing out error messages for me to uninstall all of the missing mods. It eventually hit a mod that it couldn't uninstall, and I ended up stuck. It would give me another error message about the mod, and crash.

I ended up completely uninstalling FOMM as well as any possible files that it created in my computer (AppData), as well as uninstalling and reinstalling New Vegas through Steam. I also found that my FO3 installation set itself back to "Read-Only", so I fixed that as well. I'm going to try re-installing FOMM and give it one more try.

I keep reading that Nexus Mod Manager is a really bad choice for trying to set up TTW. Is it still that way, or has anything changed since that was written out? Between the two managers, I really prefer NMM since I had less crashing even before my computer got messed up.(FOMM crashes everytime I clicked the Settings button) If FOMM is still the better choice, though, I can continue putting up with it.

Well I'm biased but I would suggest MO. NMM is not up-to-standard IMHO and FOMM, while it does the job very well, is not as user friendly as it could be.

Many of the TTW team use either FOMM or MO but I believe none use NMM.

I got FOMM working again.

I got FOMM working again. Uninstalling it, reinstalling New Vegas, and manually making everything not read-only again helped out.

I had some issues getting my mods working again. When I had played vanilla New Vegas, I had downloaded some UI and bugfix patches, but had limited myself to only those as far as mods go. When I had set up TTW the first time, I had some residual files from those mods that had been fixing stuff behind-the-scenes while setting things up. After fixing FOMM, my problems came up because I didn't realize that those old files had still been in there, and my fixing things removed the old stuff that was fixing my problems without realizing it. Ended up having to re-install DarnifiedUI so my text looked legible. I had driven myself crazy thinking that one of the hotfix and bugfix patches for TTW stopped working.

Game's working just fine now. The only major issue now is that the game tends to lock up if I try to turn it off all at once. I think if I go back to the Main Menu first, then turn it off from there, it should work fine.

Oddly enough, as far as my PC goes, after spending three days trying to fix it and finally giving up, the problems stopped by themselves. Before, the sound was garbled regardless of driver or speaker, the CD drive was being read repeatedly even though there was nothing in it (and continued being read even after disabling it entirely), and it locked up whenever I had to restart it, while booting fine when it was shut down and turned back on manually. Now, the sound seems to work and the CD drive is behaving. Not sure on restarting it though, haven't had to do that yet.
