This might be a hardware
This might be a hardware problem, with the GPU working fine with 2D desktop and light use, and then failing whenever it is placed under a significant workload like running a 3D intensive game. If you get similar issues with frex GPU benchmarking software as well as other 3D games, it is quite likely that you are having a defective GPU: Maybe the GPU cooling fan is not working like it should (fairly common problem may be an errant wire getting stuck in the GPU cooling fan, preventing it from rotating - This is the easiest to fix, simply bind that wire away from the fan), or perhaps some of the GPU memory or other GPU components or welds/connections are broken.. or maybe the GPU is not getting enough power (make sure that the GPU is installed/seated correctly, with any required GPU power connectors attached properly), also check if your computers power supply can actually provide enough power for your GPU at peak workloads (see if the power supply nominal wattage meets the recommended specs of your GPU).
I have seen a few GPUs die in similar fashions; At first 3D applications keep failing while 2D desktop works fine, and then finally the whole graphics card dies (cant do 2D desktop or even boot up at all) and needs to be replaced.
