The music doesn't work in my game.I

Post by DannyFilming » Mon Oct 26, 2015 11:42 am

I downloaded the current version (v2.9.4b) and got it installed per the instructions on the site and it works.

I'm early in the game, still around Megaton. However, whenever I turn on the radio I can only hear Three Dog and The President talk but when it comes time for the music "Here's some music" I get nothing but silence.

Please help me fix this, I don't want to miss out on the music in this game. Also keep in mind I'm new to modding in your replies so try to explain as thoroughly as possible.

I am using Win 8.1.

have an i7 4930K 3.40GHz

32GB ram

This version of Fallout Mod Manager: http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/54991/

My version of Fallout 3 is the Game Of The Year Edition from steam.

Thank you so much if you can help me fix this.

Have you checked the music

Post by RoyBatty » Mon Oct 26, 2015 4:47 pm

Have you checked the music volume setting in the game options? Sometimes it's turned all the way down.

I'm a little stumped here as I've not encountered this particular bug. Then again I play with the radio off so perhaps never noticed. In vanilla fallout 3 there should be a weak signal and static, but the NV engine doesn't work like that... Hopefully someone who knows can chime in here.

The music volume is on, I

Post by DannyFilming » Mon Oct 26, 2015 5:31 pm

The music volume is on, I even tried turning it all the way up and no change.

I ran into one of those flying enclave robots and right after the president had finished speaking it played music. I tuned in to the same station on my pipboy radio and right after the president had finished speaking there was no music. I even played it at the same time as the enclave robot and music came out of it but nothing from my radio. The music went away as the robot went away.

I also want to add that I checked the game's files and the song files are in there.

I'm open to try and reinstalling it but I don't want to lose my saves and I know very little about how to handle stuff like this. If this is an option could someone please explain to me step by step how to reinstall everything without losing my saves?

Your saves should be fine,

Your saves should be fine, they are in My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\Saves if you want to back them up.

I think the radio stuff is another issue, it's been reported by very rarely.

I looked into this problem

Post by Risewild » Tue Oct 27, 2015 1:33 am

I looked into this problem before and found out that can be related to several different things like codecs, hardware, software and even OS settings.

Here are some stuff I found a while ago when another user was having the same problem:

There were a few fixes, but this one ( http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/35868/?) is probably worth a try. Make sure you read the instructions and how to reverse the process if it doesn't work or does something not intended

I simply went to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound then disabled the hdmi audio and set speakers as default.

Here's a fix that works for me, download and install http://ac3filter.net/wiki/Download_AC3Filter

then open up the ac3filter config in your program files, there's settings to mess with, but go to the 'system' tab and either change "filter merit" to prefer other decoder, or if that doesn't work, change the output from direct sound to wave out

Just an update.. possibly your no sound issue is speaker related.

For example I have 7.1 sound speakers.. after testing them in control panel I found 2 of them werent working so set it to 5.1.

Additionally I plugged in my Headphones leaving it as 5.1 and couldnt hear walking or speech, unplug them and speech was fine. Had to set speaker config in control panel to stereo so I could play wearing headphones.

My Realtek drivers were set for 5.1 sound properly, except that there was a "speaker fill" setting that was unckecked and this little setting apparently turns stereo-only signal into 5.1 signal.

So yeah, everything (ambient sound, footsteps, dialogue, radio announcer) was working fine except the radio music.

So, if you have a Realtek you might want to check that setting and even if you don't.... there might be a similar setting for your sound card too.

Hope any of these helps.

*LOOOOOOOOOOOOUD NOISEEEEEEES*

Thank you so much!! I don't know what that ac3filter thing is but changing direct sound to wave out worked like a charm! I was so worried, I even had my cellphone set up next to my computer with a video of all the Fallout 3 songs loaded up. I was gonna play it sepearely from the game while playing.

Thank you! I didn't want to miss out on the music of the game so this is a big relief for me.

EDIT: But of course it's not that easy. Some wires appear to have gotten crossed and now NPC voice volume is tied to background ambient music volume. I can't increase or decrease one without the other. I turn music up, voice goes up with it, I turn ambient music down, and voices go down with it, but the ambient music still drowns out voices. The voice volume slider does absolutely nothing. I have subtitles so it's not the worst thing in the world but if there's a fix for this I'd really appreciate it.

EDIT 2: There's no doubt in my mind now that something is seriously wrong with the ambient background music. It's very loud and very constant and I can't do anything about it without affecting everyone's voices. Please help, it's really annoying.

EDIT 3: Audio levels are completely broken, in some houses in Megaton like my house or the water purification house the audio just goes down so far I can barely hear it, but when I go back outside it immediately goes back up again. Also, whenever the ambient background music fades out (like at the end of the track) the dialogue volume goes down with it. It then immediately goes back up again when the next background music track starts. Does anyone know a fix for this?

This happens when your audio

Post by RoyBatty » Tue Oct 27, 2015 7:17 pm

This happens when your audio or headphones are set to 7.1 surround , the game doesn't support 7.1, only 5.1 surround. So just flip the mode to stereo and try that.

I have 0 problems with the sound, so it must be something with your configuration.

During all of this I did

Post by DannyFilming » Tue Oct 27, 2015 8:20 pm

During all of this I did switch it to 5.1 so I went back into my audio and changed it to stereo and I went into the ac3filter  and changed it to stereo. Nothing.

Are you sure that's what's causing this? Has it happened to anyone else before?

It's usually the issue with people who have reported it.

Have you updated your sound drivers lately?

Yeah they're all up to date. I'm gonna create a new updated post about this and ask around a bit in other places, it's a very complicated problem.
