Can't Travel to New Vegas; Stuck at White Screen

Post by Debaser » Thu Jun 12, 2014 3:03 am

So I installed this mod a couple days ago and most everything went well. There were a few bumps along the way getting other mods to work smoothly and such, but nothing too problematic and I was able to play through a good chunk of Fallout 3 without issue before I decided to head over to the Mojave. So I went through the train station and everything, bought a ticket and got on the train to New Vegas. Flipped the switch, watched the intro scene without problems and.... Stuck at a white screen. Can't move. Can't see anything. Console commands don't seem to work. Can just hear the background music of Doc Mitchell's house. Now, I had saved right before doing this, so I exited the game, Googled possible solutions and reloaded the game. I dumped my inventory into a locker, as the only thread I could find where people described similar problems said that it was an inventory issue. The only things left in my inventory were a couple of bobbleheads, my keyring, and of course the train ticket. Tried again, and it still didn't work. This time I got a notice in the upper left hand corner saying the train ticket was removed and the Mysterious Broadcast, etc. was discovered. But I was still stuck at a white screen. So then I tried unchecking all of my plugins in FOMM that weren't the essential game components or official TTW mods. Inventory was still empty, tried again and... still the exact same issue. So now for the first time pretty much ever, I am at a complete and total loss and see no other option but to turn to help. It would be a crying shame if I can't get this to work, as so far I've really been enjoying the changes to FO3 to make it more like FNV and I was excited to travel back and forth between the wastelands. But this seems like the biggest obstacle to that I have encountered so far. Hopefully there's something stupid and easily fixed I've overlooked. Any help at all you can provide in finding that would be greatly appreciated.

I have provided the requested information below:

System Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit, Intel i7-4750HQ CPU @ 2.00 GHZ, 8GB RAM

Mod Manager: FOMM, latest version

Try turning off ALL mods,

Try turning off ALL mods, essential or not, nothing should load after TTW.esm

If that works, we can go from there

That worked... which means it

Post by Debaser » Thu Jun 12, 2014 3:34 am

That worked... which means it must have been one or more of the TTW optional files, because those were the only ones I had enabled last time. I figured they would have been tested to work so they wouldn't be a problem. Now it's a question of which one is causing the bug.

Why would you post a load

Why would you post a load order that doesnt represent what you were using?

Because it did represent what

Because it did represent what I was using when I initially encountered the problem and because that's the load order I already had saved. I explained that and explicitly mentioned in my post what I tried to disable on further attempts. Why does it matter? And why do you feel the need to be condescending? I don't appreciate that. I followed all the instructions on this site and did everything in the thread you emphasize so heavily in this forum. Do you really need to nitpick beyond that? I explained everything thoroughly if you just read.

Anyway, I found this thread which suggests the problem may lie with the Startup menu mod. However, when I disabled it and left everything else checked, now I have no menu text. Which is weird, because when the mod was disabled along with all the other mods, there was menu text. So the issue must somehow be connected to multiple mods included with the TTW release. Not really a good sign.

If you can narrow it down to

If you can narrow it down to a specific file we can do more to make it work.

Sorry, scratch that. This

Sorry, scratch that. This time I tried running it with all mods disabled except the TTW optional files minus the startup menu. It worked. That means the menu text problem must stem from the interaction of the startup menu mod with one of my other mods. It appears the actual white screen bug is directly connected to the startup menu mod only.

I had the same issue a few

I had the same issue a few days back,  I simply deselected the TTW Menu ESP and that sorted it.  I believe one or two others had the same.  After that i just saved and re-enabled it.  Worked fine then

Well yeah, like I said, when

Well yeah, like I said, when I simply disabled the Menu ESP, I had no menu text. Only when I disabled all of my non-TTW mods along with the TTW Menu ESP did I have menu text AND the white screen issue was solved. So that narrows the problem down squarely to the startup menu. The reason my menu disappeared no doubt has something to do with one of my other mods, and I guess I'll have to go through and find which one. Or maybe I'll try going through the start with most of my mods disabled along with the Menu ESP and then re-enable it afterwards. But at any rate, I do think the Startup Menu mod is a serious issue that needs to be patched. You shouldn't have a file available in the official release that breaks a major element of the game when enabled and the only way to fix it is to temporarily disable it.

Aha, yes I see it now, it was

Aha, yes I see it now, it was at the start of the last third of the wall of text you gave. My apologies for missing that.

My question was not in any way condescending. And your answer is not satisfactory. There have been countless people who have claimed that they have a "correct" load order and that something else is causing their problem. Yet, when they finally do give their actual load order, it is so very often wrong.

So when Jax asked you to turn off all mods (better yet, to uninstall them) what would have been nice is if you had attached THAT load order to your response, just so we can all be on the same page.

In this case, I do not think your issue is caused by a malformed load order. Mostly because there are at least three of these threads (and they have more than one complainant in each) and I dont recall anyone having the issue solved via checking their load order.

With all that said, having no text at all is indicative of a broken FONTS section in the ini's.

EDIT I see you think you have isolated your issue to the Startup Menu. I suggest you go to its thread, READ its thread, and then make your post there.
