Newbie: I don't understand the steps 6 and 7 in the Installation process for v. 2.6.3a

Post by Zealot » Sun Jun 08, 2014 2:11 pm

So after the initial mishap of not running the installer as an Administrator, I reached the end of the installation after 75 minutes, give or take.

My problem is after step 5. In step 6 the instructions say:

Make sure NMM is closed. Navigate to the TTW install directory and move the FOMODs (TaleOfTwoWastelands_Main.fomod, TaleOfTwoWastelands_Options.fomod) to your NMM FNV mods folder (C:\Games\Nexus Mod Manager\Fallout New Vegas\Mods\ by default)

So I went to my TTW install directory and I searched for both fomod files and came up with nothing.

However I did find these two files already in the NMM folder, along with the folders Main Files and Optional Files. No "Fallout New Vegas" folder here, so what am I missing?

As for step 7:

Open NMM and go to the "Mods" tab. Inside you should see two new FOMODs (Tale of Two Wastelands - Main files, Tale of Two Wastelands - Optional Files). Install Main Files first and the Optional Files afterward. If NMM shows the "Upgrade" dialog asking if you want to Upgrade or install normally, click No to install normally.

Well this is silly. You're instructing me to open something that I never opened before, and you don't tell me where it is? Well, I don't know how to "open NMM". Shouldn't there be more detail in this step? Am I looking for an executable in the NMM folder? Do I launch FO3 GOTY from Steam? I have no idea what to do here.

One more thing: everyone is saying that I need the Large Address Aware Enabler for FO3 mod, so why isn't it either included in the installation program or at least part of the instructions? This is all so frustrating and unfriendly. :(

Every help is appreciated.

1 - You shouldn't have installed TTW in your NMM folder.

2 -  You were told to put those files there in the previous step. If done properly they would've appeared under the mods tab in NMM. Then you're to install the main files first, then the optional files.

3 - You 'open NMM' in the same mannor you've always opened NMM - by opening the program.

4 - Pretty much all information you could possibly need is on the alpha download / FAQ pages.

I'm not sure I understand what you're talking about. My "Tale Of Two Wastelands Installer.exe" is in C:\Users\Filipe\ttwinstaller2_6_3. Step 3 says:

In the install location field, use the browse button to navigate to your preferred TTW installation directory. DO NOT INSTALL DIRECTLY TO YOUR FNV DIRECTORY.

So I kept reading and in step 6 a folder called "Nexus Mod Manager" was going to be used, so when I launched the executable I pointed TTW to C:\Nexus Mod Manager. If you're saying that I need a separate folder for TTW, what is creating the folder "Nexus Mod Manager" and can I do anything to change its path?

What previous step are you talking about? What mods tab? I've never seen a mods tab. I don't think you understood what I'm asking if you give a vague answer like this.

Right, if you don't want to help a newbie, why the heck are you here in the first place? Why be a moderator if you dislike people? What a downright arrogant and stupid answer to give. It's like saying "you crack an egg open the same manner you always crack open an egg" to someone who's never seen an egg being cracked open. Your answer is a non-answer.

Likewise.

First - I'm not trying to be a jerk. I assumed you had NMM (Nexus Mod Manager) because you said you had a NMM folder. Now I'm assuming that you dont. You'll need either Nexus Mod Manager or Fallout Mod Manager to install the FOMODs you've created. My appologies for the misunderstanding.

That's it! I didn't install NMM because the only two times the words "Nexus Mod Manager" are mentioned is in step 6 and at the top of the manual installation! Which I didn't read because I was trying to understand the "regular" installation first.

Thank you. THAT was a very useful piece of information.

If NMM fails to install the FOMODS (it happens): download and install FOMM. Then go to the alpha download page and search for FOMM and you should find a link for LAA FOMM. Drop the executable provided into the folder you installed FOMM in, overwriting the original .exe file. The exe is for v13.26, not any of the several v14.xx forks that are around now.

I think I got it. But this was extremely hard to understand what was going on. NMM did fail the installation as you mentioned, but when I tried again it was successful.

I installed all the TTW optional mods except the Reduced XP one. Then I launched FONV from NMM but in the Data Files I had to tick all of the checkboxes myself, otherwise I ended up in FONV vanilla with a FO3 intro right after the FONV intro! :D

I then started a new game and got the FO3 intro, followed by the question of where I wanted to start, to which I chose the DC start. I have played all the FONV quests, every single one of them, except ending the game siding with the Legion. As for FO3, I played it for a bit in 2009, so I'm now back for more.

So, to play TTW, I'm supposed to launch Fallout New Vegas from the Nexus Mod Manager every single time? Or once I have all the checkboxes ticked in the Data Files splash screen I can launch it from Steam/shortcut?

You can launch from a shortcut, but don't use the game launcher, use NMM if you need to change anything.

Zealot, a lot of this

Zealot, a lot of this information is available elsewhere. It is plain to me that you are very unfamiliar with modding, and that is fine, but for the sake of efficiency and quality, I would suggest you do some research on how to mod FNV in general to help avoid some problems that may pop up in the future.

This thread on Reddit has some great info and would be a good start.
