Installation aborted- can't understand why

Post by Mike_Hancho » Sun Apr 20, 2014 10:42 am

I believe I've properly followed all instructions, and when I launch the install file I set the proper directories like it needs. It appears to run through what I think is most of it's install procedure then gets to patching Fallout3.esm and I get the following in my install log:

[4/20/2014 5:58:24 AM]    Patching Fallout3.esm...

[4/20/2014 5:58:24 AM]        Fallout3.esm not found in E:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout TTW\Main Files\

[4/20/2014 5:58:24 AM]        Checking E:\Fallout 3\

[4/20/2014 5:58:25 AM]    No patch for this version of E:\Fallout 3\Data\Fallout3.esm Exists. Install aborted.

Don't know why it's looking for Fallout3.esm in my TTM directory as I clearly have the proper Fallout 3 directory set in the slot it needs to be. Also, I have attached a screenie of what the installer utility says as well if it helps.

I can assure you that I'm running Fallout 3 v1.7.0.3, and it's an official, licensed copy. I don't think my specs have anything to do with this but can post them if necessary. Just suffice it to say the specs are pretty beastly and WAY overkill for the Fallouts and Skyrim. Running Windows 7 64 bit. None of my Fallout 3 files are read only that I can tell.

Anybody have any ideas? Sorry if this has been discussed and I didn't find it.

Could be a write protection

Post by plumjuice » Sun Apr 20, 2014 10:49 am

Could be a write protection issue. Try installing TTW into a folder on the desktop.

Also, your ttw install log would be nice for anyone reading this. Its located in My Documents\my games\TaleOfTwoWastelands\Install Log.txt

I've tried desktop, Fallout New Vegas and a couple of other directories and get the same thing every time. Here's the most recent log file.

Welcome New Bison Mike to TTW

Post by KeltecRFB » Sun Apr 20, 2014 2:51 pm

Welcome New Bison Mike to TTW, I am just going through the list so don't get frustrated;

Are any of these missing or uninstalled?

  • Legal, English versions of all Fallout 3 patched to 1.7 with all DLC content (or Fallout 3 Game Of The Year Edition) installed on your computer. Pirated games WILL NOT WORK with TTW. Yes, really.

  • Legal, English versions of Fallout New Vegas patched to 1.4 with all DLC content (or Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition) installed on your computer. Pirated games WILL NOT WORK with TTW. Yes, really.

  • You must NOT be using Mission Mojave Ultimate Edition(MMUE) or NVEC Error Corrections. At the moment they are completely incompatible with TTW.

  • The installer requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable SP1 (if your operating system is x64 (64-bit), make sure you install both the x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) versions).

  • If you don't already have Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable (download for x86 or x64) on your computer, you will need to install that as well.

  • The installer requires the latest version of .NET Framework (4.5 for Windows 7 and up, 4.0 for Windows XP)

  • To find out which version of Windows you are using, open the Start menu, right-click on "Computer" and select "Properties".  In the center, look for "System Type".

  • Make sure you have none of your Fallout 3 files set to “read only” in their properties.

Nuances:

1.  If you have legal full copies of each game, are they registered with Steam?  I had to do this with mine and it was the cause of my first install failure.

2.  If you have an x64 system do you have Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable x64, Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (32bit), AND Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable x64?  You need all three and this is sometimes overlooked by users.

3.  Make sure not install any portion of the automated process in any of the Fallout directories.  Create a new folder in Downloads or C: to run the install from and point the installer to the Paths it needs.  I placed mine one level above the FO3/FONV game root folders.

4.  Make sure to Run as Administrator.

1 - New Vegas is registered

Post by Mike_Hancho » Sun Apr 20, 2014 7:45 pm

1 - New Vegas is registered with Steam, FO3 is a retail copy I bought at Best Buy and the DRM was handled by Games for Windows Live with that title. Are you suggesting that unless I purchased my copy from Steam it won't work? Surely I'm not the only person who didn't buy their copy from Steam.

2 thru 4 - yes on all counts.

If I had to guess, you never

If I had to guess, you never applied the 1.7 patch for FO3, or you are using a non-english copy.

Repatch FO3, make sure it is a clean unmodified install of FO3, run the installer again, post your logs.

Nope, it's an English copy I

Nope, it's an English copy I got at Best Buy here in North Carolina. It it not unmodded though, but I didn't see anywhere that it said FO3 needed to be unmodded, only FNV. Right clicking on the Fallout3.exe file and selecting Details says it's Version 1.7.0.3 and English. It also says in the game that it's V 1.7.0.3. I'm confident it's patched as I've been playing it for ages. Doing a fresh install is not possible right now because I left the disk at my dad's house, lol. I don't need the disk to run it from FOSE/FOMM.

Not that I'm anything special, but I do have a little experience, and this has me baffled. Maybe it's not in the cards for me to play, sigh.

I would bet that you are

I would bet that you are missing one of the redistributables or .net frameworks. Redownload and install them. If you already have them, it won't hurt anything, if you don't it might fix your issue.

Redownload the installer, the download might be corrupted.

Get your original disc or buy it on steam. It is $20 and I promise that TTW is worth it.

[/quote]I re-downloaded all those that last time I tried and most said the version I had installed was newer than the one I downloaded, so I'm pretty confident I have all the required programs installed. So yeah, buying it again is about my only option it seems. Hey the bright side is that my 74 year old father loves FO3, so it's all good. I'll just let him keep my disk. I was planning on letting it download overnight since it will take 8 hours on steam. I'll post again with successful results, hopefully.
