Very Noticeble Stuttering

Post by Mega_Dogmeat » Wed Jun 07, 2017 2:10 am

Hi! i have been expirencing some very noticeable stuttering when walking around the Capital Wasteland but none when i am indoors or in megaton. I thought it might have to do with having the medium pack of NMC textures so I lowered it to the small one still the same, I have Stutter remover but it does nothing aside from limit my FPS since I set it to 75. and when it is stuttering there is no severe fps loss it says ~60-64 fps

Did you apply the .ini tweaks

Post by H1ms3lf » Wed Jun 07, 2017 8:41 pm

Did you apply the .ini tweaks? Did you try to follow a guide such as http://wiki.step-project.com/User:Adonis_VII/TTW

Playing with many mods is troublesome when conflicts happen, because it's mostly up to you to "hunt down" which mod is the culprit. Did this happen before you installed any mods?

Try deactivating a few plugins and checking if the problem persists, keep doing it until you find what mod is causing issues. After that you can either remove that specific plugin, or make a backup of it, open in Xedit and start deleting sections, until you find which specific section/file/portion of code is causing trouble.

Can be quite time consuming, but it is a good way if you wanna learn and don't have patience to waiting for somebody elses help :P

The stutter remover changes

Post by Mystical Panda » Thu Jun 08, 2017 12:51 am

The stutter remover changes the "timing" when flipping buffered "screens", which helps to create a more engine-friendly value; less stuttering. Though this type of stuttering is more related to micro-stuttering and how images are perceived and drawn, rather than because of low memory, missing data, improperly formed images, etc.,.

From what I've noticed here with my game, stuttering can be cause by the game engine trying to allocate something extremely large, or trying to load something in, there's not enough video (VRAM) and system (RAM) memory for. It has to dump something, load up what it needs, do a bit with that, dump it, load back what it dumped previously and try to continue. That can cause quite a bit of thrashing.

Another thing that can cause stuttering is how fast your HDD is. The archives are stored on some type of storage device and the data, as it's needed is read from there. If the device is on the slower end, you'll have noticeable stuttering as the game has to "wait" for the device to read in the required data. That's why things like SSDs and SSHDs seem to alleviate it somewhat; they provide faster reading and writing to the game's data.

The CPU can cause a problem, if, let's say, not only the game, but mods were developed on a system that has a higher "cache" size internally (think earlier INTELS) than, let's say AMD. Calculations can be performed on the caches longer without the need to go back and read in more program data. Less reads = less stuttering. To the developer (either game, or mod) there's no problem, but to the one who doesn't have said resources when playing it, there's a noticable problem. Which, could be caused by more and larger scripts that need to be processed; if that's the case.

On the VRAM side of things, improperly created images can cause the very same problem. The size of an image is set within the file itself, along with other "pieces" of information the game uses to render it. If, for some reason, the image is of the wrong size, or somehow the dimensions are incorrect: a 4K bitmap for dust spec, the graphics card will get overloaded bandwidth wise trying to read in tons and tons of data. Some mods have these types of images in them; says lo-res, but really isn't,

Bad file data can cause it, especially if it's malformed just enough to not cause the game to throw an exception, but still try and reasonably use it; think of meshes and things stretched to eternity here.

On the TTW side of things, even though it's a game within a game (so to speak), New Vegas still treats it as a mod; a VERY VERY large mod. And that could take sometime to load depending on your system. I noticed there were some areas where the game (being an older engine) trucked by at a really good clip, then in some areas, kinda lagged a bit. In those cases, it might simply be too many objects are being managed by the game, and it still tries to keep up. It's hard to say without playing around with a bit more.

It's usually because

It's usually because bHookLightCriticalSections = 1, instead of 0 , it can make the game stutter like crazy.

However texture packs tend to cause hitching when loading cells in the wasteland.
