Crashing around Megaton/Fast Traveling to Megaton

Post by ChrisH » Mon Jan 06, 2014 5:34 am

So I just recently ran into a problem around Megaton area. I just did a fresh install of 2.4 because I was having issues with a quest, but anyway I followed the instructions exactly as was told for the install, started up a character I had been playing for 2.2, decided to go to Megaton, and I fast traveled there. The loading screen froze. I thought it was weird so I closed the game, and tried it again with no mods. I was running just New Vegas and TTW esms. If I traveled to Springvale it would be fine but as soon as I walked the 200 yards or so to Megaton the game froze.

I'm currently running Windows 7 64 bit, 8 gigs of ram and an AMD FX 8350 processor. My version of FO 3 is GOY on steam. Using Nexus Mod Manager version .46.

Try making your character

Try making your character wait 3 days outside somewhere, not in Megaton, so that the areas are "reset" and any dead creatures, etc. are removed.  Also try purging cell buffers. (Open the console (press the ~ key) and type PCB and press enter, then close the console.)

Otherwise, it could be any number of things.  One of those mods that you've got may have left something in your savegame, who knows...  If you make a new character and go to Megaton, does it still crash?

This happened to me even in

This happened to me even in the vanilla game. I am fairly sure that any time you fast travel to a location that is also a quest destination the game will crash. Same thing happened to me in FNV when traveling to Goodsprings. Try switching quests so that the PIP boy directs you to somewhere else, then fast traveling.

PCB helps sometimes as well.
