After completing Broken steel and starting New Vegas I have ben unable to hire any followers (I first noticed it when I tried to get Boone to follow me)

I have tried using the companion dismissal terminal at the Gun runners and getting my companions striped by dlc (Dead Money and Lonesome Road, the companions in the DLC work just fine) but still have not ben able to recruit any followers (both DC and NW)
