Install Bug

Post by ufos8mycow » Tue Jul 23, 2013 11:01 pm

Like many others I am having problems trying to install TTW.

I just bought both FONV Ultimate/FO3 GOTY from Steam. Haven't started any games yet. Installed my other mods and then found TTW and decided to install that too.

Having problems with the BSA files. Latest error was 'tales of two wastelands sounds.bsa failed to patch properly'.

I have tried to install it inside my FOLV folder (as the instructions said) and failed with BSA errors. Then I tried to install it into its own file path (C: /TTW) and that's when I get this current error.

I'm out of space on the HD to try and copy the full FONC/FO3 folders onto the desktop and copy back into proper directories. I am out of space because of these two attempts to install TTW. When I started installing I had almost 30 GB of free space but now I have a little over 1 GB left. I am assuming this is because TTW is copying my FO3 folders into my FONV folder and the C:TTW folder.

I have spent almost 12 hours on this. Having to wait for the install is taking forever. I am guessing this latest error is because the HD is too full to create the BSA file maybe.

My question is- How do I delete this bloat from my system? Since the official instructions told me to install it into my FONV folder it has integrated into that folder and I can't see the files to delete or un-install. I can't use up 30 GB of disk space to install what is simply a MOD.

While I REALLY want to play with TTW I simply cannot with the install instructions given. (Maybe instead of telling people to install it in the FONV folder you could change it to tell people to install it in the 'shorter' path that people are told to do when they inevitably report the bug...if so many people are reporting this problem then maybe stop giving the instruction that causes it...maybe)

Any way I can delete these files and free up my diskspace without having to un-install and re-installing both games completely? I'd rather play with TTW but not if I have to dedicate my entire HD to it.

I am very new to Steam(first purhases this week). So don't really know the function to 'Verify Cache' or what it does or if it will help.

Thanks for any help.

First off, I understand you

First off, I understand you are frustrated, but I don't appreciate your tone. Secondly, to remove TTW from your FNV directory, delete anything that says "TaleOfTwoWastelands" "TTW" "Fallout3" or any of the Fallout3 DLCs.

My tone? OK...

If your feelings get hurt because someone gets a little upset at spending literally 15 hours in vain trying to install your work maybe you shouldn't be in a business that deals with human beings.

I have read through bug reports on your forums and sadly your (and others) 'tone' is what I noticed in replies to people having problems. The instructions are severely lacking. As I said above...you should change the official instructions to tell people NOT to install into your main game directory but instead should be installed into C:/TTW.

At the very least you should tell people that to install TTW you will need nearly 10 GB of free disk space....for a mod. It might save people trouble and time...and they wouldn't have to come on this site to beg for help.

One reply I read said (paraphrased) 'Maybe people should read through the bug reports before being allowed to post problems about bad installs). Really? I should have read through bug reports to find a fix for what the official instructions told me to do?

Isn't that kinda ass backwards?

Instead of that I'm just going to go to the site that recommended this MOD and warn people about my experience. Maybe it'll save them some of the time and trouble I had. Not to stay away from this MOD (because after 24 hours and two naps I haven't even had the chance to play it yet) but to maybe give them correct instructions.

But hey thanks for the work anyways and good luck with your MOD work.

I don't remember being in business at all, actually, where did you send your payment? God knows I could use the money right now.

What people like to forget is that this is a MOD that we do on our OWN TIME. I know I, personally, don't have much time to devote to TTW and I would rather not spend it helping people who refuse to help themselves. You can only be pestered by newbies and answer the same questions so many times before you start getting irritated.

There are over 70000 people who use this mod, and less than a hundred (estimation) have had install problems. Hell probably less than 50. The reason we suggest people to install directly to the FNV folder is because, for most people, it works just fine and ensures that everything is installed where it should be. It is surprising how many people can get confused and mess up copying a folder from one place to another. You ARE right, the FAQ should be updated to include those suggestions, if I have time this morning I will try to get that updated. But even with all the information currently in the FAQ people still choose not to read it and instead make a post, cluttering our forum and taking away from time that we might have spent improving the mod.

First off if you have less than 10GB of disk space, you might consider getting a bigger hard drive. Also, use some logic, this is a mod, yes, but it is a mod that merges two games together. How big is your Fallout3 folder? Why did you expect a mod that adds Fallout3 to New Vegas to be any smaller than that? It IS smaller, because a good amount of the assets in FO3 are available in FNV to begin with, but not much smaller.

At any point you could have

At any point you could have asked for help, and indeed many have. I enjoy helping out people who are willing to do some work of their own and understand this whole endeavor is a work-in-progress.

Lots of people have enjoyed this mod: an overwhelming majority. I can think of nothing more senseless than trying to spread the word that it's somehow flawed because *you* weren't able to interpret text on a page. Every persons's system is a little bit different - including those who only have 30 GB of HD space. There's really nothing to be done if you don't have the minimum specs to be able to play with the mod.

The only person who is in control of installing and using this mod - is you. From the time you visit the download page and start working on your own computer, you and only you are in control of the installation process - at least when it comes to pointing it to the right directories and making sure you have the right plugins and anything else it requires. As outlined in the instructions. If the instructions aren't clear, it's your responsibility to ask someone about them or do some research of your own to be able to understand them.

You didn't do that. So tell me again who is to blame?

Pretty sure it was my post

Pretty sure it was my post you are referring to. That's fine. I'm not exactly the nicest person here. To be perfectly honest, it was posted in irritation that no-one ever seems to want to do research for themselves. No-one ever seems to think "I have a problem. Perhaps someone else on the INTERNET has also had this problem. Let's check." Damn snowflakes the lot of them.

A few things though:

1. A lot of problems that get posted here have already been posted at least once. So go post in one of those threads AFTER you have tried everything that has already been tried (and in most cases) worked.

2. This is not a general "I don't know how to use a computer. HALP PL0x!!!1!oneONE" forum. Things like dated drivers and libraries should not have to be dealt with here. If someone doesn't know how to make a folder with a shorter path (-_-) then modding is probably not something they should be attempting.

3. As Jax said, this is free. No "business" here. It's also in an alpha state. If you don't understand the implications, please refrain from posting here. This is peoples' free time, and something they enjoy. They have graciously allowed us to enjoy it to. Show some respect.

I couldn't quite understand the 30gb thing though. Do you mean after you had installed FONV and FO3 you had 30gb free? or that you had 30gb free before you installed Fo3 and FONV?

Having the BSA's not patching properly has, so far as I know, been about unrecognized versions and will be fixed in the next update.

Lastly, if you spent 12 hours trying to do something without asking for help, becoming ever more angry during the process, perhaps you should consider that a) You should have asked for help sooner, and b) Nobody cares about your tantrum except you.

If you ask for assistance, tricky, rbroab, TJ, Gribble and many others will do their best to help you. Complaining about something free, then getting shirty with one of the creators? lolololololololol

12 hours. Really!? Wow, that

12 hours. Really!? Wow, that sucks!

Funny thing is Jax and myself have spent most of our free time building this mod for more then the last 11 months. Thinking about getting every little detail correct. We have gotten some good help along the way and I'm not diminishing that at all but, for the longest time Jax and I were doing most of the heavy lifting. Trying to make the installer and FO3 mod conversion as idiot proof as possible. Unfortunately, what we have learned is "For Every Idiot Proof Plan there seems to be a bigger and badder idiot."

We go out of our way to help people and there is at almost all times a Team Member, Tester, Moderator or Admin in chat willing to help anyone who knows what the power button on there computer does. Jax and I have even helped many people by using Team Viewer and doing the install for them. Your loss is that you didn't take the time to read our thread come to the public chat or do any research and your attitude seems to have pissed off the people who know the ins and outs of the mod and could have helped you best.

Acting self entitled to a modding team that openly admits that there mod is still in alpha and says it will be in alpha for some time, then getting upset for the mod not working for you when it works just fine for thousands of people so it must be our fault!

First of all welcome to the forums laugh

Secondly Jax already told you which files belong to TTW so you can delete them so I don't need to say it again wink.

Thirdly to verify the cache in steam just open steam, click on the tab saying "Library" find the game you want to verify the cache for on the left side of the screen, right click on the name of the game and from the drop down menu choose "Properties" on the popup windows that appears click on the tab "Local Files" you will see four options and you will want the last one "Verify Integrity of Game Cache...". Hope this helps.

Now what I know about BSA patching problems is that they are usually because of the BSAopt software that is included with the installer, and windows xp, the BSAopt is third party software, it has nothing to do with TTW or is in any way related or associated with this project so we can't control that. Also IIRC it is the only BSA packer in existence so we can't really use a different one either cheeky.

Also remember this is a ALPHA version, and it is sure to have problems, there is nowhere else I can think of that would release an Alpha version of a software for public use, usually they release a Beta version and I must say that TTW is already more bug free and stable than many Beta version software out there, and Jax and Chuck are the main Devs of this project, other amazing people lend their help from time to time but pretty much of the vision and work on making this amazing project reality is of those two people that spend countless hours of their already busy days to bring us this awesome project (I call TTW a project and not a mod, because it is way more than just a mod) and what do they ask in return, nothing more than the users to enjoy their work, when a user can't enjoy it for some reason, they many times go out of their way to help and fix it. I don't understand what you mean about Jax and other people's tones in bug report posts, they are always helpful posts unless the person is asking for something that they already explained several times in different posts, and usually is them to say for that person to search the forums because their problem was already addressed and if it won't work for them then they should post on those other threads already made. Which in my opinion is the right thing to do.

Even though Jax didn't like your tone in your opening post, he still answered your question, I see no reason for you to continue ranting about him not liking your tone after that. Many people (thousands) got TTW, installed it and it worked out of the box using those instructions you complain about, instructions are made so people follow them and get it working, if by following the instructions a user didn't managed to get it working then there is a problem and it can be a huge amount of different reasons that is happening, that is why the user is asked to read the forums in search for a solution, if no solution is found then the user posts about it in a thread that is talking about the same problem and asks for help because the solution wasn't found, this doesn't seem unreasonable to me, it comes quite naturally to be honest.

I myself had problems installing TTW 2.2 it took me three days of constant installing, deleting, uninstalling, downloading C++, .NET, restarting the computer and it really frustrated me, I am the leading tester and I couldn't even install it while most users were already finding bugs I was supposed to find crying then all of a sudden it just worked, there was no explanation, I still have no idea how it worked when it had failed so many times before (really many times), that is the way software is, moody...

A tip, when you have a problem and ask for help, there is a little thing called modesty, after all its all so easy to blame others for our own mistakes, I downloaded this, followed the instructions and it's not working, it must be the instructions fault, I just go to their site and tell them off and ask for help at the same time and not only that but I will also threat them that I will go on the site that suggested TTW and write bad things about it, lets be honest the team couldn't really be less impressed, they do this for fun not for money or fame, also if you do write about how awful people in this forum are please send me the link of that site and your post so I can laugh at how you make this site more popular (because people will want to come here and see for themselves the evil admins and mods, kinda like a zoo).

A second tip, grow up, if you think the world owes you everything when I doubt you gave anything to it than you're in for a tough reality check one of this days in your real life.

Hope you get your TTW working and can join the thousands of TTW happy "costumers" laugh and if you have any other questions feel free to ask, I am here to help. smiley
