What are these?

Post by charwo » Wed Apr 24, 2013 1:56 am

I'm trying to do the Alpha install, and I know its not working cause I need to put these things on:

But I don't understand WTF these are and WTF I need them. I'm very leery of putting things on my computer I don't understand. I still don't know how Babylon got on my computer, but I had a hell of a time, and lost money gtting it flushed out. Plus bad installations and such.

Please explain these to me. All I understand is the C++ is a programing language, in the same way I understand Japanese is a language but couldn't tell you one word, one singe word from another.

Those are the framework of codes necessary to run the installer. All the things that the installer has to do require an updated version of the coding language that the installer is written in.

Plus, dont click the little checkboxes that say (Would you like to install MegaSpecial Browser Searchbar) and you dont get extra stuff.

They are required for the installer to run, without them it will not work.

I am no expert but I will try to describe to the best of my capabilities:

Microsoft Visual C++ is a "complement" that allows you to run software that was made using Visual Studio... Like I said I am no expert but I do think of it as it "teaches" (or gives the means for) your computer to learn how to "speak and read" things made in that "language" (I am using a way to describe this following your comment on languages cheeky).

And .Net Framework is pretty much the same, but it is like "teaching" a more advanced version of that "language", the more common and basic visual studio software usually don't need .Net Framework, but some do, and we start to see more and more software using it smiley.

Like I said I am no expert and these programs are more complex than just what I described but I think my explanation is the type you wanted to know... hopefully angel.

Ok, And I'm assuming I need to download all three parts? I'm not seeing the 'appropriate version' markers (I'm using Windows XP)

You should only need to download and install 2 things.

The installer requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable SP1 (Make sure you download the appropriate version for your Operating System).

Latest version of .NET Framework 4.0 for Windows XP

I will say this now, I'm not sure how compatible TTW is with XP. I know someone here is using XP, but I can't say for certain.

I'm not alright, I'm an equal amount of left.

Installing on XP can be a pain, but I'm working on fixing that (among many other things at the moment).

The FAQ covers most errors that pop up as a result of trying to install on XP.
