Installing TTW with NMM success! (NMM 63.13)

Post by ChefEff » Wed Feb 01, 2017 2:41 pm

My first post here, and not even sure if I'll be laughed out of here or not. But, hey...I love TTW. These days, I won't even play 3/NV without TTW. I love it that much. It's always bugged me that I couldnt use it with NMM (which, while not the greatest...is still pretty convenient. Let's hope though, the new NMM/MO hybrid is better!)

Apologies in advance if someone already discovered this. Feel free to chastise me as needed. But, I have consistently uninstalled and reinstalled TTW with the latest version of NMM, and I wanted someone to check my work, and verify that I am not a one off. I know this has been a long standing issue...and it's simply my hope that maybe it's resolved.

NMM Recently had an update a few days ago, which according to the notes...was a minor update but something caught my eye.

Impact: Minor

Type: Community Fixes

  1. Fixed an issue preventing the installation of some big mod archives. (Thanks to WolfMad on Github)

Now, from dealing with this issue in the past, I know TTW would run into the max memory issue when dealing with .net. I figured, what the hell. Maybe they DID fix the issue. So I fired up NMM, and built the standard FOMOD.

In the past, installing the FOMOD would get to about 54% and then smash all to hell. This time around, however...it got to about 75%...and then NMM quit. The memory barely squeaked above 1.2G. So I got to thinking...what if we can cheat a little bit?

So, I said...let's try again. This time around however...after I double clicked TTW to install from NMM, I went over to Task Manager. Finding NMM in the details tab, I set it's process priority to above normal. On the theory that, maybe...if we add a bit more process priority...we can out run the race to max out the RAM.

It worked! I could barely believe it. But it did. Now...I thought to myself. This has to be a ONE OFF FLUKE. A lucky pass. So, I uninstalled...and installed again. It worked! Again. Now, I don't know this is will work for everyone. Not even sure if this is a magical confluence of the Universe giving me a lucky break. But as I have worked IT for most of my life, I know these things do have an explanation. However, I think a little peer review is in order.

Steps I used:

* Built the latest TTW from the download page.

* Told the TTW Installed to build FOMODS.

* Added the FOMOD using the Add file function from NMM

* Started the install of TTW from NMM and then set the priority of the NMM process to "Above Normal" in the task manager. (The order makes no difference, or at least...it should not. You could open NMM, set it's priority first)

* Waited with baited breath for 100% on the install.

A word of warning. You could probably also set NMM to "High" or even "Real Time"....While "High" might work, and even be stable...do *not* set it to Real Time. Sad things will happen if you do that. =)

My specs: i5 6600K. 16GB RAM. Windows 10.

I am posting this here in the hopes that:

1. Someone can take what I have done, repeat the steps, and verify if this is just me, or will this solution work across the board?

2. If it will work across the board, then maybe it can help those folks who want to install with NMM. It may simplify things for folks.

Anyhow, peer review. Let's hope it works for you folks. =)

That's good, maybe they'll fix the path limit now.
