Can faction missions time out?

Post by catcameback » Wed Jan 17, 2018 4:35 am

I wanted to mess around and do a few mods in end game with Mr. House, but I'm worried I'll fail his missions. I'm at the last section of the game where you can get off his route and join another side.

I don't think that any of those quests actually run out of time, AFAIK the only way to fail them quests is to kill the wrong NPC or join another faction and do a main storyline quest for them.

If you have already started the final battle quest at the Hoover Dam that is different, you are basically locked into the Hoover Dam battle area untill the end of the game. Just before this occurs the game warns you with a text box - You can choose to leave instead to go do other stuff before sometime later on returning for the final battle quest.

I was running into a weird bug earlier this playthrough with House, and had convinced myself there was a timer on his route. turned out a mod was causing the securitrons to freak out on me. an earlier version of awesome crippling basically makes the strip and mr. house's bots think I'm committing crimes if I shoot anyone in the head in the strip. I always shoot benny and the bounty hunter from the debt collection missions in the head. hilariously, this causes house's questline to break, each step starts failing automatically (and the securitrons never upgrade)

I'm posting this here just for the sake of anyone in the future.

Interesting.

Come to think of it, the NCRs quest for preventing the Legion from assassinating the visiting president Kimball can actually fail due to running out of time. So if you get handed this mission by Colonel Moore and get approached by Ranger Grant, it is best to do it right away then and there before leaving the Hoover Dam area.

Is it possible to finish the quest and hear all of the president's speech? I assume you have to silently take down the sniper.

There's also the mission to stop the bomb on the monorail - that's has a VERY short timeout. You have to run (sprinting helps, if you have the sprint mod), and KNOW where the bomb is ahead of time.

Yeah, the monorail bomb

Yeah, the monorail bomb scenario is included in the quest 'I Put a Spell on You', at Camp McCarran. Requires some detective work around McCarran to find out about the bomb, after which there is that very limited amount of time to disarm it. AFAIK, the bomb timer only starts right after finding the legion spy amongst NCR ranks.

For full completion of the quest  to Save the President for NCR, in addition to taking down the sniper, you also need to disarm the bomb in BearForce One (the NCR presidents vertibird) and possibly prevent one of the NCR engineers from rushing at the president with a knife. If you actually report in any of the threats on the radio, this will cut short the presidents speech and he will be whisked away.

I used to just go up and gank that guy without listening to him- I later found, I needed to wait and listen before gankage which would then fire off the quest to save the monorail. Otherwise, I couldn't get in it at all.

smiley  I did that the first time, too. The "quest" doesn't start until he radios in, so I wait for the quest message before shooting him now. I've never bothered to let him go... I ought to try that sometime.
