Why 9 years difference when the games are set 4 years apart?

So I was wondering, seeing the message of "9 years later" pops up when you travel in between wastelands: Why 9 years? Fallout 3 is set in 2277, New Vegas in 2281, 4 years later. So why the decision to make it 9 years?


 


Looked around the forum and didn't saw a related question so yeah, new topic :P
