I'm back! Or, "Need some questions fielded"

Post by charwo » Fri Feb 21, 2014 11:47 pm

Hello everyone! I was here several months ago, and was most disappointed when my every attempt to use the Fallout 3 port turned into what I can only describe as an epic fail. Only, it was frustrating for me and a lot of you, who's help I dearly appreciate. Now, I have enough Christmas money set aside I COULD buy the Steam version of Fallout 3 GOTY (I have the disk version, and this was probably the cause of the epic failure). But I have questions. Mostly about stability as for whatever reason, a fully tricked out New Vegas is MUCH more stable than Fallout 3. I've lost a lot of progress from saves that crash as soon as I sneeze. Purrforme from the Nexus site, god bless her, said it's probably due to corrupted saves due to overuse of the standard F5 quicksave.

So, for this thread, if I buy the Steam version of Fallout 3 GOTY, is there any reason why it wouldn't work? Assuming correctly I'm not having any real problems with my tricked New Vegas?

Can I assume that any mods that work for NV will work fine in TTW? Or is there a methodology to asses that risk? NVEC and Project Nevada are the big ones.

Can mods from Fallout 3 generally be converted over using FO3 edit and changing the root directory?

And finally, what is the most stable configuration of TTW? Just a link to another thread if it exists will do.

And thank you for your time.

1: Your steam version of FO3

Post by CourierSix » Sat Feb 22, 2014 1:06 am

1: Your steam version of FO3 GOTY will certainly work. In fact, it's very much recommended to buy the Steam version. It's the version I'm currently running, and I'm not having any problems with it.

2: NVEC will NOT work with TTW without the patch between the two, which can be found somewhere in the mod section. TTW WILL work with Project Nevada, but to expand the functionality you should use Thatchor's fabulous patch which adds functionality and interplayability between the CW and Mojave.

3: You should use FNVEdit, and the special TTW conversion script found here (http://taleoftwowastelands.com/sites/all/modules/pubdlcnt/pubdlcnt.php?file=http://taleoftwowastelands.com/sites/default/files/JaxFirehart/conversionpack.zip&nid=994)

4: TTW is an incredibly stable alpha. I've played through FO3 with numerous mods I shouldn't have, and it's been an incredibly fun and mostly bug free experience. For optimal, stable configuration you should use the 4GB FNV patch, and no other mods. As you might expect, any fan made material comes with the risk of CTD's and broken saves. However, as I've said, I've played through all of FO3 in TTW, without any problems, except for ones I created through poorly made mods (most of which were mine and have since been fixed >.>)

5. You're very welcome, and I hope you have a great time here :D

Thank you so much Six! Also, nice handle!

Can I ask how the the conversion scripts work? That's the last question for this thread though, as I'm about to download the Steam one....after I figure out where the awesomesauce version of mark I Enclave armor is....

It worked! It worked!

It worked! It worked!

Uh....now that it has worked....I got the Main files and Optional Files in a seculded folder. Do I just put those in NV? And moreover, would that be safe for my old files IF I don't activate the TTW files?

And other than the specific TTW patches, any NV file should work fine in TTW? Or at least the Mohave portions?

I've finally, FINALLY got the thing and not sure what to do with it!

TTW makes no changes to base

Post by Kainschylde » Mon Feb 24, 2014 2:13 am

TTW makes no changes to base NV. If it works for NV it will work for TTW, though depending on the content you may not have access to it until you get to the Mojave. As for installing TTW, what I've seen suggested is that you run the installer to an empty folder on your desktop. Once everything is converted and in place in the empty folder, compress it with the archive of your choice (7zip, WinRAR, etc) and run it through an installer like FOMM or Wrye Bash/Flash.

But on a serious note, in my experience (as well as many others), TTW is more stable than FO3 is stand alone. Nearly all the bugs have been worked out if a proper installation is done. The rest of the stuff that is being done to TTW is more or less cross-over content.

I'm at the installed in empty

Post by charwo » Mon Feb 24, 2014 3:00 am

I'm at the installed in empty folder. The two files are main files and optional files. So I take both of those and then right click and then use the 7zip command 'Add to achieve' and then unzip it through FOMM (I don't have NMM)?

do you have TTW 2.4a? I would

Post by chucksteel » Mon Feb 24, 2014 3:22 am

do you have TTW 2.4a? I would assume so, the installer should have made a FOMOD for you for both the Main and Optional files. If you choose not to pack the FOMOD you can follow the Manual install instructions on the alpha download page. It is mostly placing the files that the installer created into your Data folder and choosing which TTW options you want to use. There is also three lines in the Fallout, ini that need to be changed but the steps are clearly spelled out in the documentation.

Enjoy!

Well, I have Fomods for both

Post by charwo » Mon Feb 24, 2014 3:42 am

Well, I have Fomods for both the main and optional files. However, I have to admit I don't know what a FOMOD is. But since I have FOMODs in both, what is the next next step? Compression into seven zip?

No just use the LAA (Large

Post by chucksteel » Mon Feb 24, 2014 3:45 am

No just use the LAA (Large Address Aware) FOMM an the standard FOMM package manager to install.

Note: this may take some time as there is a lot of Info to be placed into your game.

The FOMOD is a Pre-Packaged version of the mod for easy install. it should make the .ini changes for you and set the needed TTW load order but check these because some people have had issues.

Edit: you can also use NMM's package install from archive feature but some people have had issues with NMM

Edit, Edit: if you start a new game (Recommended for TTW) see the TTW logo instead of FNV logo and end up starting in NV you know the .ini changes didn't take and you'll need to fix this manually.
