First time heavily modded game

Post by JimmyFraska » Sat Aug 08, 2015 5:22 pm

Hey everyone! As you may be able to see, I've been on these forums for quite a long time, just about three years (I believe I joined right around when the forums went up). In that time, it's been wonderful to see the community flock to this mod, to the extent that some authors are releasing the best versions of their mods for TTW!

However, having basically no prior experience with this kind of thing, it really is quite daunting knowing where to start with all of this. I figured it may be best to just do one topic instead of a bunch of different post across bumping several different topics.  I've managed to install TTW, MCM, and the necessary bug fixes with FOMM, along with the 4GB patch. But from here, I would love to have Darn UI, NMCs packs, Project Nevada, Fellout, MMM, WMX, EVE, TTWInt, along with a range of smaller scale mods.

With NMC, for example, would most users consider it necessary to follow RoyBatty's guide on compliling the two versions of NMC together? This is where I've been trying to start, but the in depth install process (having never installed a texture pack before) is leaving me quite hesitant to touch it.

I honestly don't even know where to start with all of this. I suppose I'm really looking for general advice. Am I just psyching myself out, or should I lower my expectations and only go with a few mods?

Oh, and while we're here, a question on weather mods and Fellout. I definently am not so huge a fan of the standard look of DC after installing TTW. It looks mostly the same, but the sky definently has a more orangish tint. I want DC and NV to look as different as possible. In a perfect world, I would like DC to be overcast all the time, and NV to be sunny and hot looking, but I remember reading on here that weather mods can be fickle across both wastelands, and I don't know if this is possible. WIth a mod like Fellout, does it give both Wastelands a distinct look and color?

as far as weather mods go use

Post by LightningManGTS » Sat Aug 08, 2015 5:33 pm

as far as weather mods go use Realistic Wasteland Lighting Enhanced, since its basicly impartial and almost entirely removes the green/orange visual layer and gives area specific weather http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/59591/? as far NMC goes personally I wouldn't worry about it since your more likely to experience memory crashes even with the 4gb patch especially if your going to install the WMX-EVE combo to combat MMM mobs with TTW interiors on top of it. also look into the TTW uncut mods and use the stuff on the github https://github.com/Uncut/Uncut

Thank you Lightning! That

Thank you Lightning! That weather mod, from it's screenshots and description, actually looks like exactly what I was looking for. I also appreciate you recommending the Uncut mods. My questions above still stand, but I was also wanted some more recommendations for necessary mods. For example, I definitely don't want all the extra weapons and supplies from New Vegas's various pre order packs. Giving you all of them at the beginning of the game is just too much. I know there's a mod that deals with this(if you guys could tell me the name thatd be great) but is there something that reintroduces that content to the vendor and leveled lists?

On the same note (of necessary mods for immersion), is there a mod that makes it where you aren't bomnbarded with radio broadcasts and alerts at the beginning of the game? That is quite jarring. If I remember, there was a mod for Fallout 3 that made it where you don't hear a partiuclar DLCs radio broadcast until you're actually close to it. Am I remebering this correctly, and if so has this mod been converted to use with TTW?

Delay DLC TTW and if I recall

Post by LightningManGTS » Sat Aug 08, 2015 5:55 pm

Delay DLC TTW and if I recall a mod that deals with the crappacks was being talked about but I don't think was ever made. and as far as the rest of the crap you get at the beginning of the game your better off complaining to the TTW Devs

You want Tutorial Killer for TTW by the wonderful Pintocat: http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/47746/?

That gets rid of a lot of the annoying messages for folks who have played the game and know whats going on. Some still linger though.

As for NMC, you'll want to follow Roy's instructions on installation to the letter and you won't have any problems. If you try and skip steps you may end up with something going wonky so I'd recommend following his guide exactly. I haven't had any memory issues at all with the NMC pack. I installed it per Roy's instructions then ran the Ordenador's texture optimizer tool to compress the texture files and everything went swimmingly. I didn't ever see issues with out of memory errors until i installed EVE, Vurt's Flora Overhaul, Project Nevada and about a dozen other texture replacers for food, chems, and assorted junk. Even then it's very rare that it happens.

EDIT: I'd also personally recommend some sort of save management mod. I use Forcesave personally so if a crash does occur for whatever reason I lose very little in the way of progress.

Produces the programming equivalent of coffee stains.

If you use the performance

If you use the performance thread cell purging settings you should never crash from out of memory. I haven't crashed from that error in over a year.

In addition to what has

In addition to what has already been said, I suggest retlaw's Courier's stash pack distribution: https://taleoftwowastelands.com/content/couriers-stash-pack-distribution

to handle the preorder packs over anything else. It disperses the PoP items into the game world as things to discover, rather then dumping them all into the characters possession when you leave the vault.

I also consider Project Nevada + Project Nevada Extra Options + Roy's PN Extra Options TTW patch also to be required mods.
