TTW Classic Rock Youtube Playlist

Post by thermador » Tue Aug 13, 2013 9:56 pm

I've been thinking about this for a while, how it would be fun to put together a youtube playlist of songs that you could start up and play in the background while playing the game.

I think there are a lot of classic rock songs that would really work well with TTW's themes.  Things that are thematically consistent with the games - nuclear war, guns, bombs, isolation, desolate landscapes, post-apocylpse living, that sort of thing.

By "classic rock" I mean basically anything from the early 1960s to the late 1970s/early 1980s -- from "rock and roll" (early beatles, for example) to "hard rock" (rolling stones, led zeppelin, etc.) to "psychadellic rock" (doors, pink floyd, hendrix etc.) to "progressive rock" (the who, fleetwood mac, yes) to "folk-rock" (neil young, dylan, etc.) to "glam rock" (david bowie).

But those are just some of the big names that everyone knows.  There are lots of other artists out there, but I don't know the genre well enough to say, so I need some help!

Here are a few I've thought of:

David Bowie - Bombers

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyC0rXYSqd0

The Beatles - Back in the USSR

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxyISsA0Oh0

The Smiths - Ask

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMY4W0l4peY

The Grateful Dead - Throwing Stones

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3biwHnIArMg

David Bowie - Moonage Daydream

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U2ORPgP5_rI

I would like to make this pretty long so there's a decent amount of musical content, while sticking to the classic rock vibe, so please help me out and post some ideas.

This may be a little before

Post by TrickyVein » Thu Aug 15, 2013 6:24 pm

This may be a little before the era of classic rock that you may be thinking of, Thermador but I always thought it would be great to include early rock-n-roll material in Fallout games, the likes of Buddy Holly, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and Chuck Berry. And Elvis. You know, the soundtrack of the youth generation after the war. We get a little bit of it in New Vegas since the rat-pack is more closely associated with the late 50's and 60's than it is with earlier in the decade which is where, traditionally Fallout has drawn inspiration from big-band and swing.

I agree with you Tricky, that

I agree with you Tricky, that would make for an excellent Lore playlist! It may not wont work for the one thermador is working on, but it could be something i can look into (when i get the time and inspiration of coarse.)

Anyway here are a few more suggestions. I tried to look for lyrics about war In general, and came up with a few more for you.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvwQmxLaknc

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-DkyMXTo5Q

The Rolling Stones - Paint it Black

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InRDF_0lfHk

Buffalo Springfield - Stop Children What's That Sound

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjSpO2B6G4s

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjmAHZ0wTAs

Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watch Tower

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6oscp9vKrw

This one probably wont fit with your playlist's feel, but its a damn good song none the less

Eric Clapton - Cocaine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3L4spg8vyo

May add more later, but that's good enough list for one post i think.

Thanks morlund. Heres one more song and i'm done for the night.

The Doors - Riders On The Storm

Off topic here. There was a pretty funny argument in the comments of the above song between one dude, and pretty much everyone else who has played Fallout NV. This dude was so sure that the song was in the game, that he was telling people off. I couldn't help but laugh a little.

Hehehe, now we're talkin'. I LOOOVE me some rock, classic or not. On that note I may be stretching the 'classic' bit a little here, what constitutes classic rock to me and what constitutes classic rock to a classic rock radio DJ are a bit different, but bear with me here. I actually do listen to this stuff in the Wastes and it fits beautifully.

All good songs.

All good songs.

+1 for "Civil War", "Rooster", and "Wanted Dead or Alive," though even they are outside of his mentioned 60s-early 80s eta. The rest feel less applicable to me, personally, out of character compared to the stuff already mentioned.

If you want to step WAY out of the classic rock genre, I always liked Science and Toxicity by System of a Down (before they started screaming all the time...) they are very fitting in the wasteland, and great combat music. But as for classic rock, I can't think of anything that hasn't already been mentioned.
