Is there a way to have two copies of New Vegas simultaneously ?

Post by charwo » Mon Jul 13, 2015 3:58 am

I've not been here for a long time due to really horrible RL issues, but the last time I was here I had decided TTW was not for me simply because I could hold a mod list for one game or the other, and it's not like I know how to create a batch list to easily take out one versus the other. Well, I got a laptop for Christmas! And I tried experimenting with two installations, one for the laptop and one for the old PC. But then I ran into the Cloud issue. It won't as far as I can tell, let me disable Cloud for one version, and while I can go offline, that strikes me as a royal mess waiting to happen. One mess up and BOOM. One computer's going to get it's saved overwote.

Has any one else tried this? One platform for Fallout 3 TTW and another for New Vegas? And if so, are there pointers? I tried to search but I haven't found the right way to search for that. I really am hoping with all the conversions that I can assemble a good story from the Fallout 3 quest mods not converted and good gameplay from TTW, because even nine months ago, gameplay was WAY more awesome TTW.

Yeah, Mod Organizer has profiles where you can have one for TTW and other for FNV and other for anything else and other and other and other, etc.

Or so i heard, I do not use MO because I only have TTW and that is it.

You can also do it without MO

You can also do it without MO and with FOMM instead.  Some Team Members, such Roy Batty, use FOMM which does not have the Profiles like MO.  I guess they make copies of the folders, rename them, and then change the paths for all of the instances they run.  That is probably the best solution but it is tideous.   MO makes it easier but it has its own problems such as handling AII properly (many of us have experience this first hand) and FO BSA files (seems to be more of a developer problem.  Although, there was an earlier bug that effected all).  And some don't like the UI of MO but I am perfectly fine with it.  My only pet peeve with MO is handling AI properly.  YMMV depending on what mods you run, there is one mod that I run that MO has AI problems with.  The others seem fine.  However, when you run that same mod in FOMM, the AI problems do not exist and there are no conflicts being flagged in MO (which is another feature I love about MO).

For FOMM users the easiest

For FOMM users the easiest way is to write batch files that swap out the data folders and inis you need.

I would love to be able to do

I would love to be able to do that using FOMM, and would like an explanation about how to do that. I wonder if it would work to just change the ini back to vanilla setting and untick all the ttw stuff.

My computer specs are too embarrassing to reveal, but the game still runs.

I would suggest going with

I would suggest going with Mod Organizer as others have mentioned. I just switched my FNV install over to it about a week ago when I started looking to start a TTW playthrough. There is a bit of a learning curve, but a lot of help is available on the STEP forums or youtube tutorial videos. I was able to move all the mods I had for my previous play through (FNV without TTW) and have a profile for that character, then made a new one for a new TTW character. Each profile works fine and has different content active.
