Skill books balance?

Post by Risewild » Sun Oct 07, 2012 3:59 am

Well I was thinking that skill books in NV give 3 points instead of 1 from the books from the Capital Wasteland, which makes sense since in NV the game tries to make you use Magazines so it makes the books more rare to find. But having access to the DC wasteland then the books are just way more common, since each give 3 points it becomes way easier to up some skills in less time, this is even easier if we pick the Perk Comprehension giving us 4 skill points in one book (for example: 20 skill points from 5 books). I don't really know but it seems that unbalances the game because skill books are more numerous around two wastelands cheeky.

Maybe after TTW is released in the future there should be an option for original FO3 like books (1 Skill Point), FN like books (3 skill points) and Two Wastelands books (maybe in-between both, 2 skill points) or something like that. Now that I think about it maybe an optional mod or something.

Also about skill books (not related to balance), I always considered why would scribe Yearling pay for pre-war books that seem more like novels xD that actually useful books that contain quite a lot of knowledge like skill books that even if we are experts in some stuff like Science, Repairs, Medicine, etc we can always learn more from them (except if we Max out the skill xD ) so maybe we could sell skill books to her too or something. Again maybe an optional Mod.

Well I am just throwing ideas in the air around here so people can think about it angel.

In the old version of TTW I solved this issue by reducing the number of books in DC down to the number in books in the mojave (don't remember the exact number but DC Books = NV Books) The remaining books were replaced with magazines.

There's a mod on NV nexus

Post by TJ » Thu Dec 18, 2014 10:57 pm

There's a mod on NV nexus that changes skill points to 1. Was made for an older version of TTW but still works. In the future I'd like to make this an adjustable option, but only to the point of 1, 2, or 3 points. If you want it harder than NV that's fine, but no easier! cheeky

My project Dash is on Kickstarter!

Just wondering if adjustable

Just wondering if adjustable Skill Book leveling could be incorporated into TTW, as TJ suggested.

I'm thinking I might be unbalancing my own TTW game - based on perks I'm choosing.  I get 16 skill points per level, so my concern is that I'm going to hit 100 in all skills too soon.  (I have all the TTW rebalancing options checked in the MCM.)

Tangent: Going really deep in possible TTW Skill Book options, perhaps the player could set the number of Skill Points received in reading a book per Skill.  So the player could set a Melee Skill Book to receive '2' levels when read and a Science Skill Book could be set to '1' level when read.  (The roleplay reasoning would be fairly straightforward: a boxer would benefit more in reading about Unarmed fighting than he would in reading about, say, Locksmithing.)

Reducing the Skill Books found in FO3's DC Wasteland was a really ingenious move, by the way.

I want to be different, just like everyone else.

I use a bookperks mod so after reading enough books of each type I get a perk and the books give no skill points at all.  I do still take comprehension for the magazine boost though.
