Puppettron just asked me in

Post by Risewild » Tue Dec 09, 2014 8:43 am

Puppettron just asked me in chat what about a Shotgun, base damage 45 and 7 pellets, which is 6.5 damage per pellet.

Then having 39% DR would still deal 3.95 per pellet damage for a total of 3.95 x 7 = 27.65 and having an 11 DT would deal 1.3 damage with each pellet for a total of 1.3 x 7 = 9.1 so it give more damage to have the DR than to have the DT bonus.

So in terms of being shot by a shotgun and having 39% DR would give three times more damage to the character than having 11 DT.

Edit: I noticed that I calculated that using 39% DR instead of 34% so I will quickly just add here the right value for 34%:

6.5 - 34% = 4.29

and the total of 4.29 x 7 = 30.03

So it just causes 2.38 more which is pretty much irrelevant.

Sorry for using the wrong DR at first blush.

my major point in this is as follows:

by the time you've got the full DR load of all those perks etc, you're pretty damn far in the game.  realistically, it's basically bolstering yourself for end-game content in a manner that can't be bypassed by most enemies, which is alright because the bonus isn't really that big.  not only that, 24 dr constant is better than a med-x or slasher just on the fact that you can't get into the addiction mechanics with perks.  plus, not converting them takes zero work for fun gain.

Well Risewild and I only disagree on Barkskin, I think it should be DT, he thinks DR. Everything else should remain DR, except Cyborg which we agree should be DT. Not counting Barkskin, does anyone disagree on that setup?

There is also the issue of having too much DT. If all perks are converted to DT, it will make you nearly invulnerable to anything automatic and shotguns.

only if you mod your minimum

Post by Puppettron » Fri Dec 12, 2014 11:20 am

only if you mod your minimum damage.  as it's been mentioned plenty of times, the fallout default is 20%, so even if you've got >9000 DT, you'll still be taking ~20% of the damage coming in.  there's just very few damage sources that hit you for more DT than you'd normally be able to gear up to, and we're discussing the DT/DR thing from the standpoint of TTW, which must be designed around a vanilla experience due to the mod's philosophy.

(yes, we do often think about "how will mods affect this", but that's because we're modders and that's pretty normal for us)

In the vanilla game, assuming that you are fighting a melee or unarmed enemy and nerd rage is active, using all possible DT adding perks and chems and the best armor, you can reach DT of 85.8 which is enough to reduce a deathclaw attack to a meager 40 points. In my opinion, this is already absurd, and if you ad 11 more DT, that would reduce the deathclaw to 29 points.
