Well, solve one problem only to immediately run into another one.
I went to Novac to meet Boone and run through his quest before he joins the party. When he gives me his Beret it is grey text in the Pipe boy. As soon as I equip it the game CTD. I had a problem with a greyed out text item previously with the vault suit for tranquility lane. Not sure if this is related.
