How do you install patches? Also Having Texture Issues!

Post by ZacAttack » Wed Oct 05, 2016 5:43 am

I'm quite the novice when it comes to modding, and I have a hard time understanding a lot of it. I installed TTW today and whereas the game itself runs perfectly I am having issues. I use NMM for most everything because of it's ease, and my FOMM keeps crashing on startup now (I will probably have to reinstall it). Here are my issues:

  • I am unsure of how the patches work. I'm not sure where to install them, it says in my Fallout New Vegas folder but which one? Is it my Steam folder or the one in my c:/games/FalloutNV, or the one in my documents/my games/Fallout New Vegas? This is my main problem, I would like the patches for flora overhaul and PN so I can enjoy those great mods.

  • I am unsure on if my Project Nevada is working correctly, I have dynamic crosshair, sprinting, ect. but am unsure if I still need the patch.

  • My texture replacers aren't working. I had my New Vegas running well with NMC's texture pack, Ojo Buenos' pack, and WRP but when I installed TTW, I noticed WRP isnt working anymore. Any idea on how to fix this? It looks like some of my textures transfered from New Vegas to FO3 (particularly the terrain textures), but do I need to install NMC's textures for FO3? I tried installing it through nexus but I'm unsure if that is the correct way to install them.

Please forgive my idiocy I am very inexperienced when it comes to modding. I've been searching the forums and the web for hours but couldn't find much to help. My main problem is I just don't know where to put the patches I've installed. Thank you for anyone who can help me, it's greatly appreciated!

The documents folder is for

The documents folder is for settings and save games only. The directory with the game itself is where the patches/mods go... specifically, most will go into the data folder in the game folder. Note that textures in particular often fail to be used unless you activate archive invalidation. FOMM can do that for you - it's a command found in the menu of the latest version (in old versions, it was a button on the window). So you really want to get FOMM running. If you have problems, maybe the run-time library needs to be reinstalled. Make sure you have the latest .Net installed.

If you have dynamic crosshairs and sprinting, you got those in the proper place, so you're not going wrong yet. I suspect you just need to get FOMM working so you can activate archive invalidation.

Thanks for your help! When I put the patches into my data folder do I just put the .esp or do I put in the entire folder with all of its files/sub-folders?

Depends on the mod. Some only

Depends on the mod. Some only have an esp, while others have more. Usually you copy over everything that would normally be in the game directory: meshes, textures, menus, music, video, etc. If you see a directory like snapshots or fomod, those aren't game directories, although I'd look in the fomod directory to make sure they aren't hiding something in there. Some mods do that. Of course, if it has an fomod directory, you should be using FOMM to install it. smiley

Remember that esps/esms need to be enabled by FOMM before they'll actually be used. Just copying them into the data directory doesn't set the files the game uses to know what games files are to be used. That's the primary purpose of FOMM - to set those files that let FONV know which of the plugins to use, and what their relative priorities are.

There's a bit of a learning curve to start, but after a little playing around it gets easier. Then before you know it you'll be working on your own mods. cool

I thought all my issues were fixed but apparently not. Where should my FO3 texture packs go? I've downloaded them to Fallout 3, but I don't have a FO3 .ini cause I haven't run the game yet and I can't on Windows 10. How do I get my FO3 textures working? (I'm trying to retexture some of the weapons, it appears that NMC's pack is working already)

Textures go into

Post by jlf65 » Sun Oct 09, 2016 5:59 am

Textures go into GAMEDIRECTORY\data\textures\. Usually, textures are distributed in a BSA, which you just drop in the data directory, or an archive with paths like data\textures\whatever. You have to run the game once to get the ini files, or copy some pre-done ini files. The ini files are in your windows documents directory for the user, not the game directory. It's something like local user\MyDocs\MyGames\Fallout New Vegas\.

On W10, lately everyone having problems running FO is because of the latest video drivers. Roll back the driver to an earlier version and it should run again.

For some reason WRP and HiRes

Post by ZacAttack » Sun Oct 09, 2016 6:50 am

For some reason WRP and HiRes clothing just stopped working when I downloaded TTW. I've tried turning off and on Archive Invalidation and I've tried reinstalling each mod. I even manually installed WRP but some of the textures just aren't working, the varmint rifle looks great but other weapons like my 9mm pistol and sturdy caravan shotgun just don't work. Also leather armor in the Mojave now looks like FO3 vanilla leather armor, is textures not loading a common issue?

I don't mean to keep bothering you but I really do appreciate the help!

Post by jlf65 » Sun Oct 09, 2016 3:51 pm

There are four causes of textures not showing: archive invalidation not set (be sure it's set in FOMM), textures copied to the wrong place (be sure they're installed correctly), meshes not installed correctly (if they use custom textures, i.e., they're not a replacer texture meant for the original meshes), not enabling the mod ESP associated with the textures/meshes. The game won't use new meshes or textures unless it knows that it should; the way it knows is the records inside the esp. Be sure that the ESP is enabled in FOMM. The only time you don't have an esp for textures/meshes is if the textures/meshes replace ones that are part of the game already. All others should have an esp.
