Game Crashing PC - Possibly Load Order Related??

Post by CSquare43 » Sun Jan 05, 2014 3:07 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping that someone can help me figure out my problem. I've got FO3/FNV (with all DLC's) installed and I'm running a series of mods including TTW.

The problem that I'm having is that after a short period of playing time, my computer is completely shutting down. All the way off, not just crash to desktop.

This doesn't happen when I'm playing a different game (Batman Arkham City for example), so I don't believe it's a hardware issue (but I'm not sure).

I'm running an AMD Phenom II x6 processor (1090T), 8 gigs of ram and a Radeon 6700 series card. Here is my current load order:

I have been playing for quite awhile with only the occasional crash, but now it's crashing within just a few minutes. I'm in the Deathclaw Sanctuary if that helps or matters.

To me, that is an overheating problem.

Yeah if your machine is completely shutting down that's an issue with heat. The bios on your motherboard has a setting to shut the machine down if it gets too hot. You'll need to look for fans not working or being clogged up, and lower your graphics settings if the cause of the heat is your video card. Also, if you're technically inclined I'd advise taking the heatsync off of your CPU, cleaning the gunk off of both, and applying some arctic silver thermal paste.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I thought it could be an overheating problem too...so I removed the heatsink, cleaned all the old thermal paste off and reapplied new TP... and it's still happening.

Also like I said, it doesn't happen with Batman when I play that game...so I'm not sure it's a heat issue. I've got a giant CoolerMaster case with fans on the side, front, back & top...

I'm going to get a new cooler and see if that helps. I just figured I'd ask in here just in case it was a load order thing. Thanks again for the thoughts.

Or, y'know, just monitor your temps while you're playing FNV vs. the other games and see what's going on with your system... wink

Load up AMD overdrive, check

Post by lustephelon » Wed Jan 08, 2014 2:59 am

Load up AMD overdrive, check the fan and temp settings.  usually a couple of the fans can be taken off auto and turned to 100%.  Something to try before loading and see if it helps extend your playtime, it also has a stability tester and some other good things for looking at issues without having to load into BIOS until you have a better idea of the correction you need to make.

Also you might wanna double check your fans and make sure they are flowing in the correct direction.

Thermador has the right idea.

Thermador has the right idea. Have a monitoring program running in the background. I use HwMonitor. It does sound like an overheating issue, but I have the same processor and the TTW installer works my system 4 times harder than Fallout. If there's a way to make Fallout out use all cores I'd love to use it:). Just for reference, the installer used all cores and the processor went from 18c to 35c. Fallout warms it up to about 30c. I think 62c is max for our chips.

I don't have an answer for you other than to run a monitoring program while stress testing the computer. If the temps are fine you can eliminate one potential cause. One other cause for a blue-screen or shut down is that your power supply or mother board can't supply enough steady power when the system is working hard.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. I ended up getting a new cooler and it's dropped my temps (at idle) by @ 20°. I was able to play again tonight with no problems...so completely a hardware issue.

Seriously...thanks guys. I appreciate the advice and direction.
