Currently working on updating Energy Shields for TTW

Post by SushiSquid » Fri Jun 26, 2015 11:38 pm

Energy Shields New Vegas is a mod I made years ago that took huge amounts of work, but then never really saw much popularity. With the announcement of Fallout 4, my interest has come back to this game and to the continuing Tale of Two Wastelands project. I have converted my game over to TTW, all except for my old mod.

So, now I'm going through and updating ESNV to place shields on enemies all over the Capital Wasteland and its DLC. It'll be a bit of work, but I thought I'd make this topic for a few reasons. One, it helps me gauge interest and see how hard I really need to work on this. Two, it forces me to finish, because now I've gone and said I'd be doing this.

perms:  either a full fireworks display spelling out "Puppettron Made This" anytime a user accesses my content in-game, or just give me credit somewhere.

I like the concept and would like to see a more powerful aspect to certain factions.

I think this is plausible due to the energy shields the aliens use in Zeta.

I would like to see variants or uniques found on Zeta or OWB since this is for TTW.

Will be looking forward to your progress.

If life is but a test, where's the damn answer key?!?!?

No. They do not simply increase DR (TTW changes Intertia Suppression Field to increase DT instead). When using a shield, you take damage from shield points instead of health (not exactly, but as close as the game engine allows). The player can equip shields, but they're also found all over the wasteland(s) on enemies and allies. There are different classes of shields with different effects, plus a few uniques.

This is essentially my explanation for why this makes sense in the game. Humans developed lots of technology pre-war based on scavenged alien tech. We know from vaults in the first games that they had some level of force field tech for sure, and the Enclave uses improved forms in Fallout 3. They simply don't use personal force fields, which I don't think is a very big stretch for me to add.

Hehe. Yeah, I got plenty of feedback beyond my own playing. Boss shields were absurd. I have removed the 50DR, increased Break from 20 to 30, plus halved their recharge rates.

To counter them, ideally you'd use some kind of DoT weapon, like a fire effect or something. Remember that shields hate DoT stuff because it keeps resetting their Delay counters, plus it seems to be able to cause tiny bits of damage through the shield (which is odd because the script should run every frame and updates as it goes, so DoTs must be causing damage in the middle of the script running).
