Wanting to make a Weapon replacer mod... where to start?

Post by 5t3v0 » Fri May 31, 2013 4:19 am

I posted a thread asking how hard it would be to make a weapon replacer mod akin to the Book of Earache mod a month ago using content and models stripped from other mods (such as Ahzteks weapon overhaul) and tweaking a few stats here and there would be pretty easy. The problem is that I don't know where to start on a project like this. And I would ask someone else to make something like it for me but Seeing as both the aforementioned mods were removed from the Nexus I don't want to violate anything because I like to think of myself as a nice guy, if one a little in over his head.

Basically, to summarise, I want to make a mod, using models from other mods that replaces all the vanilla, DLC and TTW weapon models (and tweak some stats) as well as utilising the weapon mods that they can accept, but I'm a novice when it comes to modding manually. What do I use and where do I begin on something like this?

For the most part, a mod like this can be done fairly easily in FNVedit. I'd suggest that you get it, and read through the manual on how to use it. The manual is broken up into a bunch of sections, someof which will be more relevant than others. That is what I did and it has worked rather well for me. IT does take a while to figure it out, but it is worth the time.

if the main thing you want to do is tweaks, then FNVEdit is much easier and quicker than GECK. with FNVEdit, you can do side-by-side comparisons of the original and your changes.

I would echo those above, and also recommend that you start small. 1 weapon. Make sure that the model/texture is correct, the weapon mods work and that npc's use it properly. If you did a gun first try, do a melee weapon next.

Once you get a feel of how to do things, larger collections of weapon replacers will be a lot less brain-melting.

Also, consider that if you use a replacer mod, large numbers of other mods that affect vanilla weapons will be rather incompatible. Familiarity with both FNVEdit and the GECK are essential if you want to make broad, sweeping changes.

All that said, good luck.
