Mods that can cause texture issues

Post by cjb135691 » Wed Jan 30, 2013 2:27 am

I'm trying to figure out what kinds of mods will generally have the biggest impact on world space texture issues. As of lately i've been having massive texture hits regularly when i change cells, either passing through a door or fast traveling. Where a lot or all of the surrounding world space is completely messed up with different colors and pictures of things all over everything. I know this is from textures messing up and or failing to load all together. I'm trying to determine which mods can cause this kind of severity and fix the problem. I'm more than likely going to have to dump all my mods and reinstall them using only what i really need and want. Just looking for some input on this. Another problem i'm probably having with this is, load order. a lot of the mods authors don't tell you where their mod is supposed to go in the load order, leaving you to guess and i haven't been having much luck with BOSS running both games. A change in one games load order using it, messes up the other and then vise versa.

Pretty sure that more texture

Pretty sure that more texture issues, and issues in general, start to show up as you use more mods, typically around the 100+ mark or so for a PC capable of running NV at its highest settings. I've been trimming my mod list as much as possible, and using FNVPlugin to merge mods that add one or two items each, and have yet to get any texture bugs apart from some of the random paper trash textures on the floor flickering if I look down at them from certain angles. Before, I was seeing Super Mutants taking on the texture of everything around them, guns not displaying certain parts properly, etc.(Mr. Burke's 10mm pistol was doing that with the suppressor, and Chinese Assault Rifles would do it at times, for the entire gun.)

100 mods is the generally

Post by TJ » Thu Jan 31, 2013 1:09 am

100 mods is the generally agreed upon limit. If you've got more than that you should go back to the beginning with a clean install. Counting all FO3/TTW files and my patch I'm running exactly 50 mods. I'll never reach a point where I'm running 60 (or more), because I can tell the difference in 50 and 60 mods. My advice: use FRAPS. Install FNV to your settings, tweak for performance with the Configator, then run it for a base FPS score. ____ < Jot your score down here if you feel so inclined. When I say run it I mean go kill some shit, not just load the menu. Then install ALL your texture mods (via Fomm/NMM so they can be uninstalled if need be.) Check it again. ____.  Next up you'll wanna run through this process after every single mod you install. Find out how and how much it changes your game. This sounds like a real pain in the ass and alot of work, I know, but just think of the benefits you'll have when you're done. And hey, at least I didn't suggest cleaning your mods (which you should also do.)

Short answer to the original question: All of em.

OK. i'm not doing a clean

Post by cjb135691 » Thu Jan 31, 2013 1:32 am

OK. i'm not doing a clean install and starting over again unless i have absolutely no choice what so ever in the matter and there's no other solution left to be tried but that. Probably shouldn't be saying this out loud. But i'm kinda getting tired of Fallout. I've played fallout 3 fresh from start to finish and all its mods too many times now to really want to think about doing it again for a while. I'm simply using the advantages ttw adds of providing more to do with both games merged and using it make my experience more enjoyable while i play the game to more or less screw around and hunt down bad guys and find other things to do for fun. I guess i could admit that i don't really play video games that much and this is mostly at this point for something to do for fun. I do really appreciate what all you guys are doing here. It is a valuable asset. Enough of my rambling for now. Yeah i'll check out those programs before long. I just upgraded tonight from a gtx 295 to gtx 580. So i'm going to see if that has any improvement on my issue before i uninstall my mods and put back the ones i really need.

That alone should be a decent

That alone should be a decent help. Short of starting over I'd recommend removing all the mods you don't deem absolutely necessary. Start with the bigger mods and work your way down your list until you've got something you're satisfied with. Bigger mods tend to have a bigger effect, but a ton of small mods can mess things up as well.

ok, yeah i'm going to have to do it. i'll just bare with it for now and tomorrow or something i'll sit down and remove them and put back everything i can make do with. I'm at the point right now where i can't walk through a door without loosing all the textures. I've never had this happen before and i've always been heavy on mods. Is it safe to install everything with mm or do i have to do a lot of it manually to get the best results.

Still haven't found a good solution for the load order, since like i said. BOSS isn't very reliable for me with both games running together.

Try adding your loose

Try adding your loose textures/retexres to uncompressed BSA file and adding those to the archive list in the INI, I had the same issue, my install is super heavily modded, putting them in BSA's fixed the issue.

Hmm, so say if I did this to 10 small mods, what about the load order of those 10 mods? Does it take care of that?

Cause I've got 76 mods, (in the NMM plugins list), plus 16 official ESM's. Do they count?

Update: I removed a bunch of mods i could do without. OK not really, but i don't have much choice do i. It appears to have fixed the bad texture loss problem i was having. fast traveling and going through doors no longer causes textures to disappear like before. So i'm good for now.
