Post-Loading Screen Black Box

Post by walkerofearth » Thu Dec 03, 2015 6:34 am

So, I'm not sure if this is noticeable under normal circumstances, but I play/have played Fallout 3, New Vegas, and now TTW on an UltraWide (21:9) monitor. After loading screens (transitioning into a new area) the game normally shows nothing but black for a brief instant (maybe a 1/2 second). This is normal behavior across both vanilla games and TTW.

The thing is, the black you see after entering a new area isn't there because the game is still loading, it's actually a black rectangle (I presume an image?) the game is overlaying on your hud (my understanding at least). The funny thing is that in 21:9 set ups like mine the rectangle doesn't stretch so you can see 75% of the room around you, and start walking around in the area while the game is showing you this black rectangle as if its pretending to be loading.

I'm wondering if we can identify this black rectangle image and remove it or replace it with a 1x1 rectangle making transitioning from area to area more seamless.

If anyone knows why this rectangle even exists I'd love to hear it.

Sorry, I should have thought to post that to begin with.

Here is in album with a few screenshots of the rectangle: http://imgur.com/a/2I1YS

It really is bizarre, the exact same behavior is present regardless of mods or DLC in NV, FO3 and TTW.

I could try to see if I can find a program to get a video of it as well. It's only there for the briefest moment when you first enter a new area, but its enough of a visual disruption that it's quite irritating.

EDIT:

Got a 45 second video that shows this happening several times. When its done uploading it'll be at https://youtu.be/DeDq8tcRm2c

uhm... just not a long time ago, someone told me about this, a solution for another issue. With a Load Order, I could maybe tell if it's this person's mod.

That is the weirdest thing I've ever seen. I have no idea what could cause or fix that. Hopefully AC can find the solution for you.

I'd be really interested to hear about that solution, but like I said this happens regardless of mods and DLC in any game. For me, I'm quite certain it's the result of playing at 2560 x 1080 as certain other graphical issues arise (for example when using scopes or binoculars the graphics blocking out the rest of the screen don't quite fit).

To validate my claims a little bit, here's another video of me, this time in Tenpenny Tower on Fallout 3 with no Mods (but with all DLC) experiencing the same rectangle: https://youtu.be/RVzvjBvEEfM

My belief is that playing at a normal aspect ratio/resolution this "bug" is not noticeable because the rectangle properly fills the entire screen. I think even at a normal aspect ratio/resolution this rectangle could be removed though.

I think the developers intended it to be a "transition" between the loading screen and gameplay but I think the game would be better without it (especially in my case).

Hi walkerofearth, I have the same "issue" and yes it is caused by the 2560x1080. You won't notice it with 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio.

Interesting! I'm glad to have this confirmed, there isn't many of us 21:9 Fallout gamers. I know virtually nothing about the workings of modding myself, but I am pretty convinced (based on altered loading screens and HUDs) that whatever this rectangle is, and most likely I'd suspect it's literally a completely black image file (at a resolution 1920 x 800 based on my screenshots), that it can be removed.

Is there a recommended way to search through Fallout's files/assets based on image resolution? I'm just looking at GECK now and am somewhat overwhelmed. I'd be particularly interested if any such rectangle might be found with HUD-related or Loading Screeen-related assets

hrm try adding to your ini

hrm try adding to your ini under [Display] fScopeScissorAmount 0.0

You may also find the mod I made called FOV Slider useful for such wide resolutions as you can widen the FOV.

fScopeScissorAmount 0.0 helps

fScopeScissorAmount 0.0 helps for scope but not that black loading thing. The fov don't change anything with it. I tried to find something in the game BSA but wasn't able to find it.
