Help: CTD on Title Screen

Post by benbbp » Tue Jun 21, 2016 3:51 am

Hi everyone! I'm new.

First, a note on my level of experience:

I've modded Skyrim before using Nexus Mod Manager, and heavily modded FO3 by watching Gopher's videos on Youtube, but stopped playing because of CTD.  That ultimately brought me here.

The Problem:

CTD on Title Screen, before any of the menu options appear.

My System Specs and Windows Version:

Which Game Version:

FO3 GOTY and FONV GOTY, both from Steam.

What I've Tried: These are complete steps.  Do not assume I've done anything outside of this list, I'm trying to make this as exhaustive as possible.

  • Search Youtube

  • Verify Game Files for fresh install by:

    • Using NMM to uninstall all mods

    • navigated to FO3 and FNV install directories (On my D:/ drive, if that matters),

    • "Ctrl+A" and "Delete", then

    • verify game cache using Steam.

  • Verify correct Load Order (based on Manual Install directions) using LOOT and Fallout Mod Manager

  • Asked Chat and got this flow chart: https://i.imgur.com/mHP2o41.png

  • Installed all hotfixes

  • Installed NV4GB Updated

  • iNumHWThreads=2 and bUseThreadedAI=1 are in Fallout.ini as well

Which prompted me to make a post.  I've attached the TTW install Log as well.

P.S. Should I use FNVEdit to Clean ITM's and whatnot?

By CTD you mean the game

By CTD you mean the game closer all the way to the desktop without warning, yes?
perms:  either a full fireworks display spelling out "Puppettron Made This" anytime a user accesses my content in-game, or just give me credit somewhere.

Yes, Crash to Desktop.  I am

Yes, Crash to Desktop.  I am currently trying again, this time unchecking "Read-Only" on both NV and FO3.  For some reason Steam installed them that way.

How far into the menu do you get?

So that didn't fix it, either

So that didn't fix it, either.

EDIT: It loads the photo behind the menus, then crashes.  I don't even get menus.  No "Continue," no "Load Game," no "New Game," nothing.

Bump incase Puppetron didn't

Post by benbbp » Tue Jun 21, 2016 6:58 am

Bump incase Puppetron didn't see my edit answering his question.  I am finally calling it a night, I've wasted a whole afternoon on this and am doubtful I will ever get this to work.

I'll make one more attempt in the morning, I guess.

That's just a weird place for

That's just a weird place for a CTD, they normally come on start our during play. By the time you're getting the menu screen, it's loading what's in the plugins and you'll likely get a menu hang out an in-game crash if something's screwed up.

You said that you verified

You said that you verified the game cache correct? Did you do this for both FO3 and FONV before you started the TTW build? Personally I'd try the whole process from the start again to make sure something didn't screw up during the build. It really doesn't take that long.

If you crash just as it's

Post by pintocat » Tue Jun 21, 2016 2:58 pm

If you crash just as it's about to load the main menu text, it's a menu file issue... likely you have/had a HUD-affecting mod and it can't find something. HUD mods usually work by having a separate xml, which get inherited by adding an <include> line in a vanilla xml file. If you have this include still, but it can't find the file it's trying to include, it'll crash, just like a missing master.

Have you installed any hud affecting mods like DarN, Project Nevada, etc? If you are no longer using hud mods, try deleting any xml files in the \menus\ folder and verifying steam cache.

If you are using hud affecting mods, you need to use UIO - User Interface Organizer (or uHUD, but that's old and doesnt support recent mods)
