Game suddenly started to freeze up, happens after 15-20 minutes

Post by Miko19 » Sat Mar 26, 2016 10:50 pm

Hello there, folks.

I'm not sure if the Beth game engine is just being the Beth game engine it is or if I've messed something up, but I've ran into an unfortunate issue after installing TTW (or, for that matter, FNV) in nearly a year since I have last played it.

Basically, my game began to freeze up all of a sudden after 15 to 20 minutes of gameplay, with the lockups being either endless loading screens (I've applied the startupmenu fix as well as the long loading screen fix) or the game plain out giving up the spirit and freezing in the middle of gameplay, usually when entering new areas from what I've noticed, but I'm not sure if it's related to my issue or just coincidence.

I'm using the newest NMM for most mods, but I've installed TTW using the FOMM recommended on the DL/FAQ page. Besides that, I've also set up my game to use this guide - https://taleoftwowastelands.com/content/ttw-performance-guide - in order to improve performance.

LO's included in the attachments. :D

... and as a note I must say that after being able to play TTW for seven hours, I don't think I'm gonna be coming back to Fallout 4 for any other reason than to get my Season Pass' worth. xD

I can't really help much with load orders since my job keeps me from using most mods with TTW, so I can't help finding any mods that might be making your game freeze.

You say that the game starts to freeze mostly in loading areas, do you have auto saves on? if you do, try to disable auto saves and use the mod CASM (if you want something similar to auto saves).

I remember how buggy the Bethesda autosaves tend to be, so what you're suggesting may just be the solution.

I'll install CASM and report back after playing for a bit to see if the autosaves are the culprit. Thank ye! :D

Alright, uh, this is a bit weird:

CASM seemed to fix the issue, as I was able to play for over an hour without any crashes or anything like that. However, when exiting the Anchorage Memorial Facility, my game froze up as soon as it loaded the cell and I was about to walk forwards. Upon returning into the game, I've began to make my way towards the Museum of Technology. All was fine and dandy, but when I exited one of the metro stations... boom, another crash.

Could it possibly be some sort of memory issue? Almost as if restarting my PC fixed the issue, whereas playing the game for a prolonged period of time caused it to crash often until another restart... although that's just a semi-educated guess as I've no actual idea about how the game's engine works internally. xD

I would get those alot with Skyrim after I'd modded the game somewhat. Beth engines, to me, have terrible, mitigation code when trying "move" things around to make/allocation more memory on they fly. Which often results in a crash (trying to access a variable that's in a different memory block since they've just increased it but missed changing some references as an example) or just gives an ILS (infinite loading screen). A few things you might try, and things that's helped me here is:

1) Launch the game with the 4gb enabler if your not already using that.

2) Set 400 in the NVSE ini for a working heap size.

3) If your using NVSR, try disable heap replacement, or if you really need it, set it to another value and lower the heapsize to around 384. 1024 is too high and will cause an out of memory error fairly quickly.

Those might help ruling out the problem with the engine trying to improperly get more resources on the fly, which in some cases (game engine bugs), hangs or crashes the game.
