Repeat CTD During FO3 Prologue

Post by Agamemnon » Tue Jan 26, 2016 7:11 am

I just downloaded and installed TTW today, and, like it says on the tin, I can't get past the prologue. I have no idea if I jacked it up with mods or what.

  • Win8.1, Intel i7 4700HQ, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GPU (IK nobody cares, but maybe graphics drivers?)

  • Using NMM 0.61.4, installed TTW manually due to issues with FOMM

  • Will upload log.

  • Load order in spoiler, exported from NMM

  • CTD right after the words "Nine years later" during the prologue right before the birthday party.

  • Started with almost all plugins (except for a few that weren't working right according to LOOT) checked+Pip-boy 2500 installed, deactivated all non-TTW plugins/uninstalled Pip-boy 2500, patched FONV to 4GB, deactivated all nonessential TTW plugins. Then uninstalled ALL non-TTW mods. No changes.

Attached is my install log, as well as a couple screenshots of my installed mods. All mods were installed with NMM, and where available I've used TTW-specific versions of everything. Again, this kept happening with no mods at all installed, just an ENB and TTW. I'm at my wit's end here. Can anybody help me out?

You should have no mod

Post by Risewild » Tue Jan 26, 2016 8:50 am

You should have no mod enabled at the beginning of TTW unless it requires to be enabled at game start (for example TTWFixes), you should enable the rest of the mods after you leave Vault 101 for the first time (usually after you get out of the Vault 101 cave into the wasteland for the first time).

The start in Vault 101 has always being very picky about mods even in FO3 since so much happens in it.

I am the least useful team member to give advice about Load Orders since my job on the team doesn't allow me to run TTW with any other external mod, but I will try to offer some advice using the little I know:

Nevada Skies is not recommended anymore since it was made for older versions and it is known to cause problems and crashes with newer TTW versions, LOOT and/or BOSS are also not recommended to be used with TTW.

Pipboy replacers are also not recommended and some need special steps to be uninstalled (one doesn't simply disable them using the mod manager). For some Pipboy replacer help for TTW you can read more about it here:

You should also not have NVInteriors and TTWInteriors at the same time since TTWInteriors contains both NV and DC Interiors mods.

You should always delete the plugins and their associated files if you're not using or plan to use those mods, since the game still indexes them even if they are disabled and that can cause problems (yeah, it's a stupid game).

Other than that I can only offer some links that I think might help or be interesting:

We have a handy Load Order General Guide thread that can help with how you sort your LO, yo ucan find it here:

We also have a very good TTW Performance guide here:

If you need to post your Load Order in the future you might want to check this thread that says how to do it easier than taking screenshots:

Sorry it's not much help but I really haven't played TTW with mods besides DarnUI and MCM for a bit more than 5 years .

Hmm. Alright, I had assumed AFF was okay, as I'd run FO3 with it installed even in Vault 101 and it was fine. After reinstalling TTW, I still have the issue, so I'm starting over with a totally new installation and just running TTW, the fixes, and AFTER leaving the vault A Familiar Friend and Realistic Wasteland Lighting. Sucks and I'll miss some mods, especially the HD textures I've gotten used to, but I'll survive. TTW doesn't look half bad anyhow, since NV just looks better in general.

Thanks for your help. Hopefully this works, and if not, I'll be back I'm sure.

we simply don't recommend

Post by Puppettron » Tue Jan 26, 2016 8:19 pm

we simply don't recommend mods of any sort (aside from TTW, of course) during 101, it's really finicky in there and any little change somewhere can make it break free from your computer and attempt to kill your family with a live goat.

however, after you exit the vault, mod away.  rise's post has a surprising amount of info in it about modding -- surprising because he's the lead tester and hasn't played with mods in years now -- and there's plenty of other resources available on the site.

To add onto what rise and puppet said, just in case you are still having issues, ENB generally causes issues with the birth scene. In my experience, it is best off disabling it until at least the birthday party scene (and by disable I do mean fully-removing the d3d9.dll before running the game, not just disabling the enb though the OSD).

Also, Pipboy 2500 AFF will often break several things, not just vault 101. It also causes issues with the simulations in Anchorage, and Tranquility Lane, as well as some weapon animation issues.

right, the sole reason we've recommended AFF if you must have a handheld is that it's the easiest to uninstall before the times where it would break things.  as opposed to the readius which requires an abrahamic sacrifice and 30 years of atonement.

Ick, I just hate the wrist

Post by Agamemnon » Wed Jan 27, 2016 5:09 am

Ick, I just hate the wrist-mounted Pip-Boy. Looks silly and bulky IMO. :P So far in my reinstall I'm being super careful and haven't had any major issues (outside of weird stuff with Vurt's Flora for TTW), but I also haven't installed AFF yet. Thanks a lot guys.
