Save File - Major Slowdowns?

Post by MarchUntoTorment » Sun Nov 23, 2014 5:28 am

Hey all,

I'm having a problem, and this is a bit of a weird one.

On my current save, I'm struggling to hit 22 FPS. Now, normally, there are about a thousand causes from this, from bad ENBs to being overladen with mods to issues with RAM and graphics cards. However, that's not the odd part.

The odd part is that starting a new save file fixed the problem. Completely and instantaneously. I was hitting a comfortable 40-60 FPS consistently, in all areas. I haven't the first clue how - it makes no sense to me. But, there you go.

Now this is where it gets weirder. Backtracking on my character to a save before the lag picked up still had the lag present. I don't even know how this is possible, but there you go.

So, here's a list of things it isn't -

- A cell-based issue. I run Zan AutoPurge, and PCBed manually a few times too. No luck.

- An NPC count-based issue. Trying it outside Vault 101, without an NPC in sight, didn't do a thing.

- A localised issue. It's been tested at various places along the Potomac, inside every cell of Rivet City, inside and outside Megaton, and outside Vault 101. All had a (surprisingly consistent, actually) framerate of 17-21 FPS.

- A save bloat-related issue. My saves on the test game were 7mb (having only been run for 15 minutes from Vault 101 Entrance save) and the saves on my actual game were 10mb. Plus, my actual game's only been running for eleven hours.

- A computer specs issue. This thing has, up until recently, run almost everything without issue.

Anyone know what it could be, or suggest a fix?

Help would be greatly appreciated! I really don't want to have to go through the first 11 hours of FO3 again. Anyone who can help, please do!

Best regards,

UPDATE:

Alright, so going back about three hours' worth of save games finally brought me luck. I found one that runs at a solid 30FPS, which (due to recent reinstallations?) is now what my start-of-game test profile runs at.

I've also narrowed down the problem area to somewhere in Chevy Chase. I'm going to go for a dive in there and experiment. Once I have a better fix on what happened (if I can replicate it), I'll start looking at the culprit. If it's a mod by someone on here, we'll hopefully be able to work together on a solution.

I cleaned up your post. Hint: It's Project Reality. Load the laggy save with it uninstalled and test. Then when that's the issue load it with Project Reality installed and go into the MCM. Turn Heat Haze off if it's on, if it's off turn it on and back off.

My project Dash is on Kickstarter!

My bad for the messy post, TJ :/

Anyway, thanks for the advice! I ended up correcting the problem by jumping back a few saves and TGMing my way through the relevant quests, and I'm now running at between 24 and 30FPS depending on what I'm looking at and which cell I'm in.

That said, I'll try your suggestion, see if it increases my FPS any. If I go back to the spectacular slowdowns, I'll try your suggestion again.

Thanks for your help!

If you don't mind my asking, any knowledge of why Project Reality would cause this?

I can't answer your question MarchUntoTorment, but would you mind telling me how you determined your fps?  Sometimes I feel that I get a drop, and I'm curious to see if I really am or am just crazy.

ENB also comes with an integral FPS counter, activated by the * symbol above the numberpad. I think it'd an undocumented feature, but it's very handy. I generally keep it active at all times.

LO AND BEHOLD, I HAVE FIXED

Post by MarchUntoTorment » Sun Nov 30, 2014 7:23 am

LO AND BEHOLD, I HAVE FIXED IT TJ FIXED IT A WEEK AGO.

This wasn't nearly as hard as I expected. At the eleven hour mark, again, my game jumped down to 21 FPS. So I went hunting for the culprit, and uninstalled Project Reality.

I subsequently made a clean save, and reinstalled it. Now the game's running at a stable 30 FPS with Project Reality fully installed.

I have no idea how this worked, but it did! Thanks to everyone who helped here. It seems that there's a script in Project Reality which causes major slowdowns after playing for too long, which can be fixed by a simple clean save. I'm not surprised - Project Reality's an incredible mod, but really buggy.

Case closed!

EDIT: Aaaaaand this is what I get for not properly re-reading TJ's post.

...Shit.
