TTW 2.4 No Menu Fix Tutorial (should work on 2.6.X too)

Post by A55K1KA » Mon Apr 28, 2014 5:42 am

This method also served me well with the same bug on the 2.6.X build of Tale Of Two Wastelands.

Edited a portion of the tutorial/fix (the BSA Regeneration section) because I felt I didnt explain it well enough the first time around.

Renamed this page to better show what this is as a whole (I removed the word "Manual" I was worried that might deter some users).

Below are instructions (click to expand them) that explain in detail how to both properly troubleshoot the no menu bug and also a tutorial on how to fix the issue and narrow down the cause to a single file if you are commited enough.

This is the exact method I used to fix my install of TTW, I can confirm the troubleshooting will find your issue (assuming the issue is not in your NV install prior to TTW being added).

This tutorial is broken down in to sections, the first portion is a troubleshoot to find the cause of the issue and determine if it is the plug-in or master, or if it is the BSA associated with it.

The next portion after that will be methods for fixing the issue, and at the end is instructions for a manual fix.

The manual fix will require 7z and also FOMM.

How to determine the Cause(s) of the No Menu Bug In Tale of Two Wastelands (TTW) and fix them.

! FOR VERSION 2.4 of TTW !

Recommended for advanced users only. This Tutorial I guess you could call it, was made by the User: A55K1KA (tale of two wastelands username)

; My Instructions as seen on the forums at www.taleoftwowastelands.com

Troubleshooting is as follows

1. untick TaleOfTwoWastelands.ESM in your load order, load up the game and check if there is any improvement.

2. if not, leave it unchecked and move up to the next ESM in your load order, untick that and test the game.

3. if no improvement, retick the last ESM we unchecked.. and then untick the one above it in the load order.

4. test, if no improvement.. repeat step 3 until you have tested all the FO3 DLC ESM files.

5. once you have tested all of the files as described above (not the FO NV ones just the FO3 ones), if you still didnt see a menu, continue to step 6, However if you did see a main menu, screen shot or export your load order (at the time it was working) to a txt file and upload it to this thread.

6. this is where it gets a little complicated, you will want to check the DLC ESM files in groups of 3 ( 3 active 2 inactive at a time) until you have tried all the combinations.

7. if you still havent seen a menu, try it with 2 active and 3 inactive ESMs, once again try all the combinations.

( step 7 is where i got up to before my menu showed up)

8. if it is still not showing (this must be getting tedius by now but just bare with me we are almost done), you will want to try with a single ESM from the FO3 DLC's active at a time, try all combinations.

9. Finally if it still is not showing, try launching the game with out any of the fallout3 DLC active, so the only Fo3 file that will be active is the Fallout3.ESM.

10. if you reach this point, return here and share your results and it should help the people supporting the mod here narrow down the issue.

;End forum instructions

;Start Manual fix proceedure aka the "FUN" part

Basically this part assumes you have found the ESM(S) causeing the issue with the steps above...

If you have not found the cause to be an ESM do not continue this...

===========================================

Extended Troublshooting

===========================================

You have determined the ESM(s) causing the no menu issue, but the cause it not the ESM itself in most cases I have seen.

Go to your New Vegas data folder, and find the BSA's with the same naming convention as the ESM(s) that appear to be causing the issue.

Move (DO NOT DELETE) the BSA's to a new folder on your desktop, name this folder "TTW_IG_BSAs", if it means anything to you I call it that so it represents the Installer Generated TTW BSA files. (you can name it what ever but I will refer to it from this point as the name I set).

Re tick all the following ESM files in your load order, and ensure all others are unticked...

FalloutNV.ESM and all of the normal FalloutNV DLC, (Couriers Stash packs are optional).

Fallout3.ESM and all of the DLC that comes with it

TaleOfTwoWastelands.ESM

NOTHING ELSE SHOULD BE ACTIVE unless it is a perminant requirement of TaleOfTwoWastelands.ESM

This was accurate as of 28/04/2014 thats DD/MM/YYYY format.

launch New Vegas, (If the menu works, dont jump to the conclusion that it is all fixed now, as if you continue as it is now any DLC or assets that are added by that BSA's you removed would not be there.

If the menu works AND you have the correct load order as described above, then you can determine the issue is in the BSA(s) you moved.

If this is the case, continue with the instructions listed here. Otherwise your issue will not be fixed by this "Tutorial".

I am recommending everyone reading this tutorial to at this point (the point where you should have determined that it is a BSA issue and know which set are causing it) to do the following steps before proceeding into the manual fix section..

=======================================

BSA Regeneration Using The TTW Installer

*Edited by A55K1KA on 20/08/2014 DD/MM/YY - reason, I felt that it didnt explain it clearly enough*

=======================================

This part assumes that you still have your files generated by the TTW Installer in the same path as specified in the 3rd line of the installer.. if not re run the installer prior to this section.

1) go to the folder where you installed TTW (your TTW Install Folder) remove the first BSA file that belongs to one of the esm's we found to be the problem (from above steps).

2) re run the TTW Installer, it should skip the existing files and go right for the one that you removed in step 1.

3) remove the next bsa in line that belongs to one of the esm's causing the issue as we did in step 1.

4) re run the TTW Installer, again it should only regenerate the file we removed.

5) repeat steps 3 & 4 until all the BSA associated with the problematic DLC have been regenerated.

6) copy - paste the files generated into your nv data folder and try the game.

===========================================

Extended Troublshooting Manual Fix

===========================================

Ok now this part is where it gets complicated, please be sure that you have 7z installed and also that you have FallOut Mod Manager (FOMM) installed.

Once you have those 2 programs installed (assuming ALL of the information above is relevant to you)

Go to your Fallout3 install directory and copy the Original versions of the BSA(s) associated with the ESM(s) that we determined are causing the issue...

The BSA(s) you are copying should be very similar named or if not exactly the same name as the ones you already moved out of your New Vegas directory.

Place the Copied BSA(s) into a new folder on your desktop, name it something like "FO3CopyBSAs"

Now go to the folder we called "TTW_IG_BSAs", copy all the BSA(s) that are in that folder, and place the Copies into your Fallout New Vegas directory (back where they were before).

At this point you should have 4 sets of BSA's...

  • 1 set in your Original Fallout 3 Directory (we can ignore those from now on).

  • A 2nd Set in our "FO3CopyBSAs" folder.

  • A 3rd set in our "TTW_IG_BSAs" folder.

  • and a 4th and final set in our Fallout New Vegas directory (we wont be changing these from now on).

Assuming the above part is correct, we should be able to continue..

Right now you will want to create a new folder inside each of the 2 folders we made on the desktop, name the sub folders "ManualBSAExtract". Now open FOMM, and use the BSA Browser to open and extract each of the BSA(s) in the "FO3CopyBSAs" folder and place the extracted files into the sub-folder we created.

At this point you will want to check the folder structure of the folders inside the sub-folder we just extracted to. Most people can pick abnormal structures.. but in the off chance you dont know what to look for, I will include an example of a data folder.

The folders you might find are as follows...

Config (not entirely sure about that one)

LodSettings

Menus

Meshes

Music

Shaders

Sound

Textures

Video

If you find any others it might have had an abnormal structure in the BSA, and will need to be ajusted manualy. If this is the case, seek further help or look at the BSA names to get an idea of where it should go.

Do the same thing for the Other BSa's in the other folder ("TTW_IG_BSAs" folder) we made on the desktop, extracting them into the subfolder as we did before. Again checking the folder structures.

Finally you will want to make a 3rd folder on your desktop (name it something memorable to you) (this will work as a drop off point for any files that are found to be missing in the next section).

Compare the files indevidualy if possible between the Fo3 and TTW sub folders we have made.

A good way to do this is to copy the entire fallout3 Sub folder into the 3rd folder and then delete EVERY SINGLE file that you just copied over (in the 3rd folder) but keep the folders. Tedius I know but it will make this alot smoother.

Now if you find a file that is in the fallout 3 sub folder but IS NOT in the TTW sub folder we made, then copy it into the 3rd folder, keeping its normal folder structure (which should already be there if you did the line above this one).

A quicker way to do the comparing is to navagate to each folder that contains a file and copy the files all at once into the TTW equivilent of that folder, but DO NOT OVerWrite.. Before you deslect what you copied (I know some might do that out of instinct) right click and CUT the highlighted files.

Now you have ONLY the files that are missing in your Clipboard. Now simply paste them into the corrosponding folder in the 3rd folder.

Continue this until you reach the end of the sub folders.

If you have done all of the above, then you will want to go back to the main folder in the folder 3 system, should look something like my example above (should look pretty much exactly like the fallout Newvegas Data directory).

Select each folder in that folder indevidually and use 7z to make a 7z archive out of each folder.

Nearing the end now, once the archives are all made, use FOMM to install the first 7z archive into your fallout directory as if it were a mod, if you dont know how to do this, please see the FOMM mod page on the nexus.

run the game and check if the menu works with 1 of the 7z archives installed, you know it was one of the files or some of the files in that 7z archive that was missing...

else if it doesnt work, uninstall the 7z archive you just tried and try again with a different one (this is basically the same troubleshooting method we used earlier to find the ESM causing the issue).

Repeat the process the same as we did earlier at the begining of the troublshooting until you find a combination that works, once you find that combination... you can do 1 of the following..

A) Continue the proccess using what we have learned to narrow down the exact file and avoid all conflicts or issues ( I will warn you this might take a very long time depending on the folder that caused the problem)...

OR

B) just play the game in its current state and play around with any potential issues like missing meshes or textures and other minor stuff if they arrise.

If in the un likely chance that the final part of adding the missing files didnt work, please make a forum topic at the Tale Of Two Wastelands Website and state you have done the steps in this tutorial, which ESM is causing the issue and that removing the BSA(s) associated with that ESM fixes or doesnt fix the issue, however adding the missing files does not fix it.

Also please remember to report your findings to the TTW team, be it in a forum topic or a bug report.

I hope this has helped you fix your TTW install and has the game running relitively smooth for you.

If any part of this is unclear please go to the Tale of Two Wastelands website and ask for help there, there is always someone there willing to help people with trouble.

Have fun playing TTW!

I've tried it and came to the point where I had to use the BSA Browser to extract all the content, I get an error there which says "Arithmetic Operation resulted in an overflow."

Man thank you so much for this, I was about to reinstall EVERYTHING again. Followed your steps, found it was the Pitt BSAs that were corrupt, and fixed it. Again thank you, saved a lot of time and effort.

The installer isn't just

Post by Risewild » Fri Aug 15, 2014 3:33 pm

The installer isn't just copying a BSA from one game to the other, it is opening that BSA, extracting all the files that needs from the BSA (there are cases where it doesn't need all of the assets in a BSA), patching the files that need patching (making them compatible with the FNV engine and any other stuff they need to not break the game), after all of that the installer grab all the files that are needed and all the new patched files and archive them back into a new BSA, which is the one ready to be installed into Fallout New Vegas as part of TTW. smiley
