TTW: best with FOMM or NMM? an NMM issue, too

Post by WizardOfAtlantis » Sun Feb 17, 2013 12:42 am

So I'm looking at a fresh new install due to an external drive crash.

What are you guys using to install TTW? Any preferences between the two?

I am leaning towards NMM but since the latest updates (where it looks for mod info online, mod updates, etc etc), I simply cannot get NMM to load up FNV. It starts...and then goes nowhere, and takes forever doing it. I haven't got FNV loaded up yet with the basics of TTW in my data folder (meaning the FO3 bsa's etc). I've even deleted the install info folder and everything.

I didn't used to have this problem, but with the last updates I most certainly do.

Anyone else have this problem? Could NMM be looking for info that it won't ever find, and therefore...I don't know...staying in limbo?

Well I have both, sometimes I use FOMM others I use NMM, never had a problem with NMM, but I have been canceling the updates for a while so I don't know about this last version.

I can never get NMM to work, I only use FOMM...actually I only manually install, but FOMM when it's required.

I'm not alright, I'm an equal amount of left.

hmm...this was what I was expecting. I was thinking I would find someone who uses NMM but hadn't updated in a while.

Swear by FOMM. Wish it was still updated, but even old and decrepit it blows NMM away (trust I know, I've got NMM too.)

  • Takes less than half the time NMM takes to load.

  • BOSS Autosort function built in.

  • TESsnip, although limited in use at this point, still allows you to look at a script for reference when you're modding.

  • BSA browser, extracter, and packer.

  • Did I mention it's faster?

Those things don't sound like anything right now, it sounded like gibberish to me when I first started modding. But once in a while you come across a mod you need to edit, or find a file within one of the BSA files, and when you're overloaded with mods, you have BOSS Autosort.

I've never had issue with it.

I always stuck with FOMM as well. Don't fix what ain't broke, ya know? FOMM has never failed me and it continues to never fail me. Between the simple interface, built-in invalidation toggle, FOMOD support and handy load order export/import functions I couldn't ask for more from it.

By the way if NMM starts and then takes ages to start it might be because it's checking to see if there is an update for itself and updates for every mod you have in it (even if its not enabled or in the plugins tab, just sitting in the mods tab of it), so if you have a lot of mods in it it will probably take a long time to search for updates, my advice in case you manage to make it open is disabling the check for updates on startup, and check for new mod versions in the preferences. Also I do agree with everyone, FOMM may be old but it never gave me any problems, and all the tools it contain are great.

Agree with what TJ said, FOMM

Agree with what TJ said, FOMM has some features which are mind-bogglingly absent from NMM.

But, apparently, you should never have them both installed at the same time. I have had both installed very briefly with no issues. No-one had any issues with both installed simultaneously?
