So another question here, are assault rifle and service rifle kept as distinct guns, or are all assault rifles replaced with service ones.
Another question about weapons

I'm not entirely sure what
I'm not entirely sure what you're asking but the games are pretty similar in their combined form as they are by themselves. In DC you'll see a lot of Assault Rifles and Chinese Assault Rifles and in the NV side you see a lot of Service Rifles and some Assault Carbine's just like normal.

As far as I know, they were,
As far as I know, they were, and still are different separate weapons. In TTW, I would expect to find Assault Rifles in the Capital Wasteland and Service Rifles in the Mojave Wasteland. Of course there could always be some exceptions to this.
Service Rifle: A post-war manufactured semi-automatic AR-15 clone with wooden furniture (stock, grip and barrel shroud) instead of plastic. Looks like an M16 assault rifle, but is not full auto. Used by the NCR as a standard military issue personal weapon on the west coast - Just about every NCR soldier has one.
Assault Rifle, R-91: Made pre-war by Stent Security Solutions, this was standard issue personal weapon for National Guard units in the East Coast region of the United States. Looks a lot like a G3 battle rifle, but is lighter and fires a smaller 5.56x45mm assault rifle round. Fully automatic. Most of the pre-war Assault Rifles found in the game are in poor condition (but may be repaired, of course).
Both weapons do fire the same 5.56x45mm NATO round, but AFAIK that's where the similarities end.

Oh, k thanks, that was what i was hoping for, Assault rifle is standard issue for pre war American troops. where service rifle is standard issue for NCR troops, i am glad to see this bit of distinction had been kept, even though the devs could have taken a lazy route and just merge them, here´s to hoping we see 3.0 soon, i am holding out for it before i start playing. Cheers

It would have been more work
It would have been more work to merge the leveled lists actually, and no we don't do stuff like that. Modders are free to do such things.
