How to play Caravan?

I never figured out how to in vanilla Fallout:New Vegas. The guy`s holotape was pretty much useless to me. For some reason or another I keep drawing cards until I run out. Anybody here that understands the minigame, or should I stick to BlackJack for a way to earn extra NCR money and caps?

There's also a free app in iTunes for Caravan which has the rules as well. Pretty fun to play outside the game
