How was this possible?

Post by a2937 » Thu May 18, 2017 12:16 am

I mean it is amazing to think two games could be cohesively merged into one. I`d like to know what all the patching did. Was there major image conversions? How did the team make them compatible? The scripting languages are slightly different. Were they imported using a FileInputStream and contents were replaced as though it was a text file? Were the Navmeshes needed to be changed at all? If so, how was it handled?

Assets are extracted from the Fallout 3 bsa's and are either deleted, renamed, patched via bindiff, moved to another folder, or transcoded and bsa'd again.

ESM's are patched via bindiff.

Changes are done in the TTW ESM.

2.x was not updated to plugin version 1.34 (and form version 15), 3.0 has been.

Navmeshes were not touched in 2.x, they have been completely refinalized and fixed in a few places in 3.0

The scripting language is exactly the same, New Vegas has some extensions to Fallout 3's and a few commands operate in a slightly different manner due to engine changes.

New assets were created specific to TTW.

There are quite some engine differences that must be accounted for, the music system, AI, weather, weapons, to name but a few. All these things have to be patched or reworked a bit.

There are some slight differences in the nif format, these things have to be altered to work in the New Vegas engine. This has to do with a particular collision node type.

I hope this answers some of your questions. I'm keeping it rather brief as I could ramble on for some time about these things.

Thanks for answering my questions. I cannot wait to see the new release of TTW. Your team has done a great job thus far. Maybe someday some Fallout 4 modders will help get all three wastelands into one. Haha.

Fallout 4 engine is unfeasible, missing too many mechanics, the perk system, the dialogue system, etc.

Fair enough RoyBatty. The closest possible thing is using lots of mods.

Tale of Three Wastelands has been discussed at great length. It is more or less impossible to do without building it from the ground up (think Skywind) and taking out some features of New Vegas (IE: Gambling).
