You cannot install PN, PNEO or many other mods without a mod manager due to the complex nature of their installers.

If you cannot get FOMM to work correctly there must be a problem with your system.

No, not my pc's fault. Totally mine. Like I said, I'm a complete noob with regards to pc's. If it wasn't for Gophers video's I wouldn't have a single mod installed. Took me about a week and lots of internet searching to find a step-by-step guide on how to install TTW :p

I figured it out though and everything seems fine now :)

I do have one question though. I DL'd PN extra options and put it in a folder on my desktop. I can open it and see everything there.

But when I try to get FOMM to open the folder (FOMM>package manager>Add FOMod) it's empty... What am I doing wrong?

Got it installed properly (as far as I can tell) with NMM.

You don't extract it, you add

You don't extract it, you add fomod like you're doing and select the archive.

So I don't use Winrar to

Post by Wolfways » Thu Oct 27, 2016 10:15 pm

So I don't use Winrar to extract it? I just DL it and use FOMM/NMM directly on the DL?

If the mod you're trying to

Post by Risewild » Fri Oct 28, 2016 2:15 am

If the mod you're trying to install comes in a .fomod or some other archive file (zip, rar, etc) then all you have to do with FOMM is to:

  • Place that archive in your FOMM mod folder (usually something like: "C:\Games\Fallout New Vegas\Mods") and then just:

  • Use the FOMM package manager like you already did

  • Find the archive, select it and FOMM should do the rest

    • If there are options while installing, then a window should popup for you to choose what and how you want to install.

  • Then wait until it is done and that's it.

Didn't even know I had a Mods folder. It has some things in it but I have some stuff in a folder on the desktop too. I probably have stuff all over the place :/

But as far as I can tell everything I've DL'd is working so I'm not going to mess with it :p

FOMM makes a default

Post by jlf65 » Fri Oct 28, 2016 3:48 pm

FOMM makes a default directory for mods to be placed in called game-directory\mods. Note that it is NOT in the data directory. This is where FOMM expects the mod archive files (the .fomod files) to reside. It's one of the things I don't care for about all mod managers - they expect all mods to reside in a single directory. I prefer to make a hierarchy of directories to sort all the downloads to make them eaiser to find and identify. I keep asking for support for sub-directories and nothing ever comes of it. Yet another reason I manually install everything.

If you like Gopher's tutorial videos (I love them myself as well), I would suggest doing a youtube search for gopher and whichever mod manager you're using and make sure to start at the beginning of the series.  If you start with his very first video he generally assumes you know nothing about modding or the specific mod manager you're using and those first few videos will tell you everything you need to know about how the mod manager works, where it puts everything, how to resolve conflicts, etc.  He also specifically targets some of the most popular mods that almost everyone uses like MCM, DarnUI, UIO, PN, oHud, etc and shows how to install those.  I don't think I've seen one from him specifically for TTW though.

Yeah, Gopher's got many good

Post by jlf65 » Fri Oct 28, 2016 6:03 pm

Yeah, Gopher's got many good videos on all the (recent) Bethesda games. If you don't mind him spending upwards of an hour sometimes simply playing with settings, he's fun to watch. Of course, if you don't like watching someone fiddle with settings, that's what fast-forward is for.

Yeah I regularly watch

Post by Wolfways » Fri Oct 28, 2016 8:41 pm

Yeah I regularly watch Gophers Youtube channel. I wouldn't have any mods if it weren't for him, but I watched the "basic stuff" ones a long time ago and have forgotten most of it.

I could watch them again if I find the time (have a 2 year old son/nightmare) but tbh I'm happy with Fallout the way I have it now. Thanks all for the help though :)

Hmm - it's Project Nevada that makes the food such an issue, especially in hardcore mode. PLain vanilla without hardcore, I agree, food isn't an issue. The chems are also more important with PN in hardcore - for example, you run out of doctor's bags and run into raiders - half of them throwing grenades, and the other half shooting at you with hunting and assault rifles. You NEED to pop some Med-X to ignore your crippled limbs so you can fight, and HC means you can't just inject the limb with a stimpak. Pop some more chems to do more damage, steady your aim, boost your AP... it's a whole 'nother game compared to vanilla normal mode.

Note for food in the Capital Wasteland with PN I've been OK since I installed the mod "Simple Roasted Food": http://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/55859

I of course needed to make my own PN compatibility patch which added the flags that PN adds to all food, as well as rebalances the food in comparison to PN's values. I plan on releasing the patch on Nexus but haven't yet. Most food from the mod only restores 15-30 hunger which is nothing compared to vanilla values, but at least the meat can be farmed at a low level easily enough and once cooked won't increase the PN dynamic HTS values. I consider it proper balancing for the Capital Wasteland where food is scarcer. I also play with PN Rebalance on at least "Tough Bargain" so buying food is silly expensive at the beginning.

For the OP's question: really if all you do is use a mod like PN Rebalance and up the trader difficulty / balance you will likely find serious use for crafting. I highly recommend this as caps can be too easy to come by especially in the Mojave Wasteland.
