The biggest issue I have with radiation is actually from Mart's Mutant Mod. A Glowing One can 1 shot me with his radiation attack if I haven't used a Rad X.

Huh - guess that's why I always snipe them from cover. I'd forgotten how bad their radiation attack is. One head-shot with a .308 rifle and the sneak crit does the rest. For a while, I was using the Fallout 4 Ranks mods, which is mostly nice, but converts the Glowing One attack from radiation to an explosion.

I do that eventually too but when I first encounter a Glowing One, my most powerful gun is usually a varmint rifle which does zero damage to it. So I'm stuck with melee weapons against them initially. Also I think the guy who made Mart's must have a sick sense of humor because it seems like it's disturbingly common for me to have things like Deathclaw Matriarchs or Giant Albino Scorpions spawn right on top of whatever location I just fast traveled to where I'm promptly reacquainted with my last save point. No idea if that's supposed to happen but I find it amusing even in death :)

I'm struck by the range of people's experiences, and my own on replay, out-of-the-vault. The random aspect of the game, and tweaking mod settings, seems to do a great job at creating a different resource environment.
It is supposed to be a struggle after all, if not all the way through then at least the beginning, so I'm not sure why people complain or add mods to make it easier. I also tweak my PN loot settings to make things even more rare. That way, it forces me to conserve ammo, only use the sniper rifle for sneak attacks on select targets (why waste .308 on a dog?), then shift to assault rifle, pistol, or BB bat...
As mentioned most cooking recipes make the food have better benefits, however, making mirelurk cakes (mirelurk meat and bottled water) is a waste of resources - do the math on HP recovered from raw ingredients verses cooked outcome.

I'm guessing you're using one of the easier presets (or the default maybe) for PN. Try the FWE or hardcore preset (The hardcore preset disables fast travel which I don't like), I like to use the FWE preset with loot levels tweaked to be even more rare. I like the scarce resources. When I run out of ammo (and I do), I'm forced to switch to whatever gun I DO have ammo for. Needless to say my sniper rifles sit around collecting dust for a LONG time before I start getting enough .308 ammo to actually use.

Sorry I'm a complete noob when it comes to mods (and pc's in general) but I can't find any presets in PN. Am I missing something?

Great thanks :) Will look for it now
Okay, new problem.
I can never seem to get NMM or FOMM to work properly so usually do manual installs, but I'm probably doing that wrong more than I realise.
I got PN-extra options installed and in the ingame mod menu under "Equipment" it just says "404-File Not Found".
Also under "Unfound Loot " all the DLC's are greyed out.
Any idea what I've done wrong?

You cannot install PN, PNEO
You cannot install PN, PNEO or many other mods without a mod manager due to the complex nature of their installers.
If you cannot get FOMM to work correctly there must be a problem with your system.

I think most people worried about cooking are playing Hardcore mode where food and water doesn't heal at all, just satisfies hunger and thirst. The cooked food usually has less radiation too.
I definitely agree about scarce ammo though. This is the aftermath of a nuclear war, you're supposed to have to scrape and scrounge to find things to survive. At least in the version I prefer to think of. Plus it forces me not to just decide on what my favorite gun is and use that for the entire game.
One valid complaint that people have about difficulty increasing mods though are cases where someone doesn't want to be forced to play the "sneaky sniper" character. If everything stronger than a mole rat can 1 shot you then playing any sort of melee character can be rather frustrating. That said, I've found that once you get access to something with fairly reliable knockdown effects, you can melee pretty much anything. I find it very satisfying beating a Super Mutant Gargantuan (or any number of other things that can 1 shot me) to death with a super sledge :)

That's why you have to play a SNEAKY melee character. Sneak up as close as possible, then rush them at the last second and start wailing away. ![]()
One thing that can help is a mod like Decoy Tin Cans: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/3780/?
Hmm - I should convert that to TTW. Maybe add the crafting like one of the comments suggests...
