Mods? Because in vanilla, he is not essential but nothing will attack him. Before or after his conversation with the player. You can kill him, but nobody else will actually attempt it.

I wasn't using any mods because that was when I was playing it on the PS3 actually. He might have gotten caught in a cross-fire. Or maybe I'm just getting the whole thing confused with something else. I don't know. It's hard to remember, this was years ago, not long after New Vegas first came out after all.
