In the FAQ it is stated not to use custom races as they have implementation issues. I have come to believe this advice pertains to custom races being used as player races and that custom races being used by companions would work with no problem. Is that the case or am I misinformed?

I am playing with custom race
I am playing with custom race and no problem. Just make sure, that you give your custom race a child race. You can do that by coping one of the child races and attach them to your custom race.

Yossarian is right. We
Yossarian is right. We usually advise to make sure your custom race has a child race and an old race assigned to it. The proper thing to do is if for example you use a custom asian/white/AA/hispanic race, make a copy of said race's default older and younger race and assign them to your custom race Then go to those copied races and assign your custom race to them as well. This is so that when you get turned into a kid in TL, the game will be able to age you back into the proper race. If you just assign the default child race it'll age you back into the default race instead of your custom one. I don't rightly know of any time you're aged into an older race, but it's a good thing to do anyway.

I don't understand the fuss
I don't understand the fuss about the custom race problem. Why not just enter "showracemenu" after leaving Vault 101?

Well later in game you are turned into a child again during Tranquility Lane. If you've gained any levels and perks, using showracemenu to change races will disable some perks and it won't show. but it's effects will be there.
Broken Steel starting doesn't like custom races either. When you play a custom race and finally finish the main quest line, it just gets stuck and doesn't proceed with custom races.

Well, that's pretty bad.

Facemasks are the only solution then, I suppose.
